So the 2JSWEDE is running well and this weekend I pumped some e85 and started to turn it up.. My axle has been making a whining sound since I had the b230 in the car so I know it was on its last leg. 21psi of 2JZ sweetness was too much and I suspect the pinion crush sleeve has deformed "crushed more" and is no longer holding the pinion correctly in place making an awful noise.
Nick Slayer aka "gross polluter" had the same issue with his 2JZ setup and told me he considered building a crush sleeve eliminator. I have been searching the Jeep forums and found a few people have made there own.. I was curious if anyone here had done the same?

Obviously a ford 8.8 swap will be the ultimate goal but if this could be a nice stop gap to get me a bit further along I would like to look into it.

It would look something like this..

Using the solid/ shimmed set up is the best way to go, setting up ring and pinions is a science, but not rocket science. Also too much backlash will cause noise. Check everything carefully before you take it apart. It is not easy to do any repairs with the rear in the car, on your back, up side down and sideways.

I eliminated the crush sleeve on wennstroma's diff. I had a machine shop make the spacer using a piece of hardened steel tubing 1.4" o.d., 1.2" i.d. and ~.475" long. I had an extra made if you're interested.

I did this for Adams (vwtech) ls1 drift car when we setup a fresh 1031 for it.

Definitely recommend not using the crush sleeve and using a solid spacer. The crush sleeves are just not durable enough for heavy use and IMO are the main cause of R&P failures on these cars.

I think I used some 4140 Normalized alloy steel material to make it.

Fun fact, 240 turbos don't use a crush sleeve w/ their R&P.

Awesome.. I am glad to hear some other people have done this.. Where did you guys get the shims? Also who is the best place to get the bearings from? I am gonna likely do this and want start with some new parts if I am going to all this trouble.

I did a spacer for my buddies E34, just used some chromoly tubing and it happens to work out that Ford 8.8 spacers worked for the shimming.

Yukon Gear&Axle They have rebuild kits and ring & pinion kits, they should have kits for the Dana 30 diffs? MSC Industrial Tool Supply Co. also has shims by I.D/O/D dimensions X thickness.
