Default 262C Bertone, the Wide One!

At last I decided to open a new project thread for my 262C Bertone! I think some of you might have already seen this one in Garaget.org but I hope there will be some interest for my car?

I purchased this car already four years ago, January 2009. I picked it up from Gothenburg and drove it back home to Finland in a quite heavy winter storm.

The Bertone is MY 1978, manufactured in late 1977. That is a good thing because the cars manufactured in -77 are the last ones which don't have to pass any kind of emission tests here in Finland. So it's a perfect choice for turbo conversion.

The car was not original any more, it had newer style front and rear sections but the interior was still the original hand tailored one from Italy. The engine was also swapped to a B23E K-jet one.

Here's the first pictures from January 2009:

Some more pictures can be seen in my website. Writings are in Finnish but the pics are universal!

Then I started to tear it apart and you could never guess what I found? Rust, rust and some more rust!

Some more rust pics here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-purku1.htm

Then it was time for some sandblasting before the heavy metal work:

More pics here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-purku2.htm

And more rust removal and some welding:

Sometime during the year 2009 I found these bad ass 17" steel wheels from Sweden and I got the brilliant idea of making the Bertone a wide body one!

So, in January 2010 we started to stretch the car suitable for the wheels. It is nice to have a skilled friend who took care of the welding.
And I already had a Bross body kit waiting for the right car!

The other pics are here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-pelti1.htm

The original 240 rear wheel wells are not so symmetric when the car is really slammed. So we had to make new ones using the front fender parts. They were almost bolt-on, only had to cut them in four pieces and weld some!

Then the Bross skirts were laminated to the body and after that the car looked like this:

Excellent thread title. That'll make it easier to find when everyone is like "hey, remember that one 262 that was cool? yeah.... that wide one."

Anyways, car looks awesome... which is doubly impressive given that it's a bertone.

In the spring 2010 it was time to check under the car. The floor had some rust also.

More pics here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-pelti3.htm

And time to get all the chassis parts sandblasted:

The parts were painted with a very durable paint designed for trucks and tractors. Then I mounted the first version of suspension to the car:
- Lesjöfors lowering springs
- yellow Koni Sports
- IPD panhard, torque rods and sway bars
- rear axle has a Detroit TrueTrac diff
- all the bushings are Superflex ones

And more pics, here you go: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-alusta.htm

July 4th 2010 the Bertone got some new paint on it. The special color was mixed just for this car by my friend who painted it.

More pics here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-maalaus1.htm

Then it stood all alone in the dark over a year before I got my new garage ready in October 2011:

And more pics again: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-2011.htm

Those WWW steelies (world wide wheels ) were also sandblasted and painted to look like new ones in spring 2011.

These 17" wheels are Peugeot 407 steel wheels, flipped and widened to 9½" rear and 8½" front. I purchased Falken FK452 tires for them, 235/45-17 rear and 215/45-17 front.
Wheels have now specially made centric rings, not for the wheels but for the Volvo original hub caps.

Get the other pics here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-vanteet.htm

Then I decided to get the suspension, phase II, to get the car really lowered but still nice to drive!
- coilover set from Sweden, Myranes.com
- adjustable coil control arms

The next pics here: http://www.volvere.fi/262C-coilover-1.htm

And now at last we can move from past to present!

During the last few weeks I have managed to activate myself to assemble the Bertone again. I got the hood and trunk lid from the paint shop and it launched the acute need to get back to garage again!

So here we are right now: hood, trunk lid, front parts, bumpers and some lists are on. I went with the Flathood because it really is my absolute favourite hood for 240's.
Head light frames, rear lights, Bross front skirt and the original Volvo 240 rear spoiler are in place just for testing them so far.

Here you can see the latest pictures, I'll be back with the engine pictures and information some time later! I hope you like it!

That's no Bertone, it's so wide it's a BERTHA.

This thread is so much win. Keep it up!

Does no one have issues with those single shear rear shocks? They look like trouble!

Awesome car, Lots of work put into it.

Wow, great looking Bertone. I usually don't like them either, this car is far beyond the exception! I was worried when you first threw the body kit on, but you really pulled it together!
