1987 244DL M47 "Turd Ferguson"

No redblock has ever died from running 20-50.

Not worried about the weight of the oil itself, wondering why it was being run in the first place.

It does leak a little oil so next weekend I think I'm gonna have a solo day where I clean out the flame trap, MAF, maybe do some underhood cleaning and wiring stuff. Maybe scout out the JY for at least a driver's seat too, who knows.

Looking good on those gold wheels!

Thanks!

Funny story on the wheels actually.

Mike (245mike) saw a 244 on the side of the road every day for a pretty solid while and eventually went to ask the guy about selling it. The guy who owned it agreed to sell it for $600. Mike didn't have $600.

So he calls me up and asks if I can lend him the money. I agree, we discuss terms. The car he wanted to buy had these wheels on it. I told him that I'd front him the money and he would repay me in full plus give me the wheels. He had sets of steelies laying around so it was no big.

I ran them from that point up until I sold my wagon to David (Xeroni) who ran them for a short while then took them off and they were in his garage. David charged me to buy them back but it was pretty cheap and he even threw in a box of stuff from rockauto (mounts, bushings, shocks, etc) so it ended up being a pretty sweet deal.

But yeah, I like how they look.

You forgot something when you were here..

That convoluted story makes them even better in my book. Are they MSWs?

I had a 78 244 with something very similar back in Portland. Keep up the good work on the car man!

Thanks!

It's already pretty fun, smashing around in the dirt without giving a ****. I think tomorrow on my lunch break at work I'm gonna drive to my mom's house and pick it up so I can dick around in the employee parking lot, which is all gravel and has a few mounds to drive up on.

It's also a nice change of pace from my DD, which is a completely dumped Rabbit on 17" wheels. That car rides okay but this sedan is suuuuper plush in comparison. David, Tylor and I actually thought something was broken because it was riding so smooth.

Those blown front struts and the cheap ass Monroes in back make it feel like driving a cloud, just floats over all the bumps.

even that little dirt patch was pretty bumpy when i nailed it coming out (not when i did the powerslide) but it was surprisingly smooth.

Which is great, and exactly what I want from this car because it's nice to have at least one car that is capable of driving over stuff.

So I've been thinking on it and I'm seriously having difficulty figuring out what I want to do.

Part of me wants to raise this thing up a bit, throw some A/Ts on it, and beat on it. But it's not a wagon so it would look funny lifted, and it'll never have the same practicality as a wagon.

Part of me wants to drop it down, get it registered somewhere smog exempt and strap a turbo on it. Since I never did that with my last car it would be fun to have an actual turbo brick project car.

There's not a ton of trails around here and I really don't go camping that often. But OTOH, I'm more likely to break stuff (like the transmission) if I start trying to make power. I'd feel more confident with the car if it had a stronger transmission. But auto cars are a lot easier to find and this was an auto car when it was new so it has the correct radiator to start with, if I decided to go AW71.

Though cheap turbos are getting hard to find aside from eBay stuff but then you're still paying several hundred for cheap china crap. Buuuuuut I could also just say eff it, drop $400 on a chinabay T3 and see what happens.

What say you TB? Focus on making it a reasonably stock, reasonably reliable but slightly lifted car and enjoy having something that can actually negotiate speedbumps and curbs without care? Or go full kool-aid, break stuff and make boost?

Why not both? Slightly lifted with a 13t for insta torque would be a fun dirt beater.

This has nothing to do with the fact I have a turbo and etc laying around...

This was the other thought too.

The Rabbit, for only having 170hp/177ft-lbs is still likely going to be quicker and definitly more reliable than any stockish setup I do with the 244.

Small turbo could still be a fair bit of fun. Won't be racecar status but that doesn't mean it won't be good for some laughs...

edit:

also 13c little baby turbo is less likely to turn my gearbox to shrapnel so that's an attractive option, I'll admit

just keep the engine stock and lower it a lot. Then you don't have to worry about the transmission.

yeah but on the other hand if I grenade the M47 I can either

1. justify finding a cheap T5 and doing that or
2. put an auto in it

and while I don't want an auto trans, they are much stronger than the ****ty Volvo manual transmissions so either way it's an upgrade.
