project '82: 760 16VT swap IT RUNS!! with vid

Ok, this is what i did this summer......

my brother's 1982 760 had a wacky B28E (K-jetz acting up) so we decided to swap in a redblock. for this purpose we already bought a B234F last year, but a earlier this year we stumbled across a totaled 740 16V turbo with a good engine (20K miles ago replaced by the dealer...)

The car itself:

interior is green, don't know what Volvo designers were smoking back then

the V6....

The crashed 740:

The car had a nasty swipe on the driver side, totaled.

still looks pretty damn brand new...

Step 1, removal of old engine:

P7063104.jpg

B28E+M46 in the air. it still ran pretty good before pulling. As a surprise it developed a ignition problem as well while we were fixing the injection. after that we were done with this engine.... :-P

step 2, removal of the B204FT

P7073122.jpg

after some digging we reached the engine. damn, there is a lot of crap in this engine bay....

P7073126.jpg

A/C lines stuck
i think you have to pull the engine to replace them....:wtf:

while pulling the engine it started to rain...

finally OUT!

P7093157.jpg

and on the engine stand waiting for some maintenance. A few seals were leaking very very bad.

P7100018.jpg

P7100019.jpg

yuck, balance shafts....

P7100016.jpg

EGT sensor. luckily in good condition, its expensive at the dealer...

P7100026.jpg

Windage tray and block reinforcements....

We also too care of the balanceshafts....
DSC00185.jpg

Tapping the oil feed of the intake side one with M12x1.75 mm, lots of grease and magnets to catch any shavings...

DSC00204.jpg

and closed off with a bolt, copper ring and some black rtv.

DSC00188.jpg

exhaust side oil feed tapped for M6x1 and a small grub screw with rtv..

The drains were plugged with small freezeplugs.

P8223141.jpg

almost ready to drop in!

P8223145.jpg

looking at this picture, i think we might be related to the poi.

P8203205.jpg

freshly painted sump with a bung welded on to fit a temp sensor. welding was hard, the pan was dual layer with oil inbetween..... :omg:

P8223146.jpg

bye-bye balance shaft!

P8223148.jpg

new flywheel bolts, rear main seal etc...

P8223151.jpg

the original volvo tools are pretty affordable....

P8223153.jpg

a clean M46 and almost new clutch kit (same PP as the Diesels had, so should hold enough power to have fun )
We couldnt find a M90 for the right price so the M46 has to work for the time being. With new bushings etc it feels pretty good. I wonder how long it will survive when the boost is raised and the PZ cams are fitted.

P8223163.jpg

engine tilted to the wrong side, was quite a struggle to get it in. we had to be careful not to damage the new brakelines...

P8223168.jpg

finally in place after 1.5 months on the engine stand! It was after midnight when the engine was finally in the engine bay bolted down.

P8223172.jpg

wee!

Still a lot of stuff to do... wiring LH, fitting exhaust and adjusting downpipe for the new turbo (new T3 60 trim with .63 exhaust), fitting the new brakes (new calipers, stainless steel braided hoses, better pads, grooved discs), the fixed front suspension (painted, new poly busings, cut springs, new joints), fixing some rust, making the IC fit..... still a long way to go .
The engine will be left on stock boost and with stock V6 exhaust for the checkup (they do a sound level test etc, all kind of crap).
After that the boost will be increased and we already have these goodies: chips, E85, 630 cc/min 4 beam injectors, PZ/penta cams, JAW, LSD and maybe some other stuff. We smoothed out some rough edges of the manifolds as well. I think it ha some potential. The only thing we are missing is the fuel pump, we ordered a Bosch 044 pump but it still isnt here after 3 months. hooray for www.boschfuelpumps.com (they also stopped responding to out mails).

This is going to stay a sleeper, so close to stock ride height, stock rims etc. should be a lot of fun when its finished haha.

I would like to thank Martijn (blabla here), Ruben, Fredrik and Jacob (Homer) for their help, parts and input!

It's nice to see a thread like this, knowing what was going on and all.

Now it is out in the open and will be boosting very soon I guess.

Congratulations! :-D

I too have a B204FT here which I thought I would be able to finish in time for the trip I made to Holland this summer. But noooo.... that didn't work out.

The B230FT ran extremely well though. But now it's dead... :-(

The B204FT will be placed in another project car I guess... we will have to see what the future holds...

green is super baller, never seen it on a 7xx, also those goofy gauges are 1982 only, especially the small clock in the corner, and check out those dash vents ROFL it's like 1970's chrysler style.

pics of all green interior please!

Cluster's also found in 1983 models. With respect to green interior, the '84 760Ti that donated its B23FT to my 245 was a green interior car...

Drool.

Hey, can you get B204 intake hoses and heat shield? New or aftermarket. Price? I need MAF to turbo and turbo to IC.

Awesome, did you get rid of the LSD IRS already?

Gonna stick the 740's interior in that to get rid of the horrible green?

if you supply part numbers i can ask for prices when im there, but be warned, its hella expensive. the amm-turbo hose needs a aluminium pipe to the turbo as well.

the LSD from the rear axle is said to fit in the 82 axle. we'll see.

The cluster is indeed very nice. very 240 like. too bad the dash is pretty cracked and the doorpanels are discolored from the sun. already sourced a set of better panels.. My brother also bought a new knob for the headligts, the one that is in there is really ugly.
Lots of parts look likle 240 parts. the front shocks are the same as 240 shocks (my decarbons fit, just a tad too short, but thread and end is the same), spring perch, strut mount etc is almost the same.

oh and the brakes:
DSC00226.jpg

Goodridge lines with stainless steel couplings.

DSC00230.jpg

Grooved Brembo discs.
also: new calipers in the front, pbr metalmaster pads, removed backing shields, 4 new copper brake lines in the front, new guide pins. will find pic later.
