Thanks!

Your 740 gives me inspiration to work on the exterior of the car next year, I should start planning for that. Thinking it would be best to do the entire car in one go (paint etc.)

Been working on the exhaust and the M90 install
Downpipe is 71mm stock, so my brother welded a 3' piece on to it

Next I made the tail pipes, simple stainless steel 2,5' cut under a slight angle

M90 install....
removing the M46 wasn't really difficult, loosening the bellhousing bolts was the most difficult. Old PP and flywheel looked ok, no oil on them etc

Preparing the M90 (new oil and seals, also new clutch fork)

Fitting the new flywheel

Weight billet flywheel = 5,4kg
Weight 850 PP and disc = 7,5kg
Total = =/- 13kg

Dished flywheel = +/- 14kg
M46 PP and disc = +/- 3,5kg (maybe 4)
Total = +/- 18kg

So differences of roughly 5kg, but on the old flywheel lots of weight was on the outer edge giving a lot of energy storage I guess,
I think (hope..) it will be very driveable with the new setup

850R PP, partnumbers

It fits!

Really good clutch travel/feeling, operation is al little bit harder, but still light

Now fitting the driveshaft, shifter (thanks Blabla and Joris!) and other bits.
Going to fabricate the exhaust hopefully..

Edit:

Finished fitting the shifter assembly and mounted the driveshaft

Sweet, that's a nice upgrade over the M46.

Any idea how much torque the 850R pressure plate can handle?

I think my name should be written on every piece of M90 accessory you got from me .

Remember to drive it on the Ring, not only towards it . . .

Making nice progress and as always clean and good work.

So, worked hard the past week to get my car ready for MOT and the EU 5.0 meet..

Finishing the exhaust was hard on my back, but very happy with how it turned out. Need to lengthen the tail pipes since that would probably improve the noise.

Made a bracket to support the downpipe using the original clamp. It's just a piece of square tubing painted silver

Summit bullet and first muffler in place

Over axle bend (mostly made myself but also using stock Simons parts)

Last muffler, needs to be adjusted still

Added a third bung on the downpipe since the M90 left no room for the O2 sensor..

Did all the weld myself btw, second time ever i welded with TIG, first time ever I made and placed an exhaust on a car without any help.. it took a long time to finish this but certainly learned a lot about welding and stuff!

So the car was ready for the meet!

The meet was great, also found a nice picture of my car

The drive went ok, lots of fun. Four people in the car and still faster accelerating then a fast honda civic haha

I also rewired the headlights (directly from the battery so more light now!) and installed a relay to feed the fuelpump and wideband directly from a main positive terminal in the car. Now the white volvo fuelpump relay doesn't get really hot anymore.

Few more things I did in the last few weeks

Got a new oil line for the turbo, the original one is still ok, but I don't like the stock line, this is going to be much better:

I also fixed a lot of stupid little things like a leaking tail light, loose plastic housing of mirror etc.

I removed the back windshield, since it wasn't sealed properly anymore, it was possible to push it open along the entire top side (like 5mm!)
Getting it out was dead easy, cleaning etc. went ok and got someone to glue in another one (I actually grabbed a winshield from a 87- 740 that had the one with the heating lines in between the layers). Looks very nice, need to polish it a bit etc.

At least I don't get any water in the car anymore (solved this with ductape for +/- 7 months....)

I also had good looking door cards for my car, bought a few years ago. The ones I had when I bought the car were severly tanned by the sun.
This also gave me the opportunity to install electric window regulators, finally it's becoming a 760.... wiring was already in the car for this btw, just need to give it a main positive via a relay. All regulators together weigh in at 10kg (21lbs?)

I also cleaned the doors from the inside, used tape and zipties to stop rattles and gave some new rust protection (but very happy with how well they were looking in terms of rust, there was none!)

Tadaa

(Installed speakers in the rear doors as well! Also installed wires, just need to fix up an amp for the speakers on the rear shelf, the volvo radio only has 4 channels.. This means I soon have 10 speakers:D)

Talking about the speakers I have in the back (under the rear windhield), I opened them to see what 28 years of sun had caused..

Only the small tweater like speakers failed, the other ones are still pretty much ok. I need to find out what I can put into them, maybe just get rid of the filter that's in it?

But it's an impressive piece of stuff, the housings are made from aluminium, weighing a lot (think about 5+kg).

Just need to install all the interior parts again that I removed for the replacement window, and do some other small stuff and then I'm done for the next few months..

And the other picture I found of my car on the Nordschleife

About the M90 install, everything works perfect, except the gearbox is making the famous noise of clicking gears..
I talked about this with Martijn (blabla) who had the same. It's supposed to be ''normal'', 850 drivers also have it sometimes.
I hope it will become less anoying...

Not really a logic order in this post..

Hot damn. I've never seen a 700 with manual windows or, for that matter, a manual transmission (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada).

Green interior on the green hell. I am jealous (won't make another green pun).

Was a fast corner, not much steering required.

Haha, the green suits the exterior so I like it, and we have plenty of manual window volvo's over here.

Meanwhile, whilst mounting the TCU correclty (the mounting bracket actually fits the 1982 mounting points!) I swapped it for another unit, just because I was lazy to swap the bracket from one unit to the other..

Drove a bit, car felt slower then on the Ring (on the Ring it easily did 200 km/h on the straight). Started wondering what was wrong, but then I remembered the TCU swap...
Seems like I mounted the TCU for a 950 ecu (white label one). Hopefully this solves the problem.. will test it in the next days.

Also ordered a aluminium IC from KL-racing in Sweden, so preformance wise I'm good to go for a while (although I also want a truetrac). I now need to start looking at some rust prevention and the exterior for next year.

Still in doubt how I'm going to solve the exterior, touch it up or do a respray...

Choices, choices...

nothing to gain performance wise so choose what's best for the least amount of money OR buy my 740 GLT blackline with perfect exterior and 9" borbets and swap everything over

I was thinking of upgrading mine too, I was at a local shop and they quoted about 500€ for custom one (they do lots of rally cars) but that's rather pricey.

Which one did you order?

Hi,

those noises you mentioned are totally normal cause theres no pilotbearing which is the same problem also on the 850 when this noise occurs...

BTW thats the reason why volvo installed a 2massflywheel together with gasoline engines on the M90.. The m90 diesel95+ doesnt mattered cause it was overnoising the grindinglike sound..

I for my self also have this loud noise.. what you can try is.. pull the clutch and listen to the noise disappearing.. man youre driving a volvo.. if theres a noise turn up the music :D

Borbets? Why weren't you at the EU5.0 meet?

I've read that yeah, but it is still annoying.. You don't hear it when you drive at a constant pace

Best solution for all volvo rattles

Meanwhile, the KL-racing IC arrived:

Needs a little bit attention with a small grinder, but seems like a solid unit. We'll see when it goes in.

Also have a 2nd cam cover that is getting blasted, so when that's ready I can look into swapping the cams. During all this we're also trying to get LH2.4 to do what we want..

The clutch is doing perfect, very good bite when shifting fast so I'm happy
