Default Is my diff leaking or somebody else is incontinent?

I stuck my head under the butt of my car yesterday and took some pictures. Someone is leaking enough to cover the entire right driveshaft. Who could be doing that?

I might take the car to the powerwash place and use engine degreaser thingie on the rear axle to see where it starts leaking...

Also, shouldn't it be a metal plate held by one of the diff bolts somewhere?

Probably a trail from a seeping pinion seal. You may also want to change the rear cover gasket. check and see if it smells like gear oil. You only get a small metal tag if the anti spin diff is installed.

Metal tags were used on 140 and older models to identify the gear ratio. Later cars came with a sticker on the axle tube.

The anti-spin tag was much larger than the ratio id tag.

Did you verify that the breather tube on the right driveshaft is free and clear? I can see it in the picture, its in towards the diff on the top of the right driveshaft. Its a nipple that has a plastic flex tube attached that acts as a breather. If thats clogged the heat could be causing some pressure inside the diff thats forcing its way out somewhere, creating your leak.

On the tube type axles the tubes are pressed into the diff housing and plug welded to the housing, not oil proof. I have seen this on many rears as time goes on. Other than a bad pinion seal those leaks are normal as time goes by

What are the two round thingies in this picture?

nyalex, I have not found the nipple you mentioned, but I will look for it later on today

They receive the pins for the diff case spreader.

The vent tube nipple is on the drivers side axle.

On a 140/240 yes, but the picture is from a 700/900 and on those it's on the passenger side.

FTFY.

I rarely work on 700/900 cars so it was an honest mistake.
