Changing the glass in a 240 side mirror

I need to change the glass in the G/F's 240 right side mirror. I know its the little slot on the bottom that you adjust the cog with a screwdriver (or vodka tonic if it sticks - heh heh) and the glass is released.

Fine.....HOWEVER....

this car is a 92 and the slot ISN'T THERE! You can see where it "was" but they didn't make a slot there, so how do I get the glass out (intact)?

at some auto parts stores you can buy a 7"x7" plate of plastic mirror like stuff with an adhesive back, you could just buy that, cut it too fit, and place it over the flawed glass.
