Never done a t belt on a redblock
Getting ready to replace a head this weekend
Do I need the special tool to remove the pulley?
Do I even need to remove it.

If tool is needed to hold the pulley down has anyone made a home version

Thanks

im about to do a t belt. yes you do need to remove the balancer to see the lower timing marks. yes homemade tools can be used. I saw a write up a while back of a compressed gas bottle cap & a long pipe. however for $70 you can buy the tool from ipd.

other options to remove the bolt holding the balancer on would include feeding about 2 feet of 1/4" cloth rope into cylinder #1 when its just after tdc of the compression stroke (rope stops piston from moving alowing you to losen it.)

do not use the "starter" trick to losen the bolt. for two reasons. 1 you run the risk of shearing the windrift keys that keep everything aligned. two, your up a certain creek with no paddle for tightening said bolt back down
