240 Installing Amplifier and speakers ('82 244 Turbo)

I'm going to be installing an amplifier and some 6.5" component speakers in the front doors and 6x9s in the rear deck. The 6.5" components will have the 6.5" speakers in the lower door and the tweeters in the existing 4" speaker holes. The 6x9 speakers will go over the existing 5.25" speakers holes in the rear deck, and I will have the amplifier in the trunk. I was trying to install the 4 gauge power wire which goes from the battery to the amplifier on the driver side, and I wasn't able to find a rubber grommet to go through on the firewall. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how I go about putting the power wire through the firewall. I would also appreciate any advice on cutting holes for speakers because I have never done anything like this before. Also, how do I access the area where you feed wire into the front doors? I can't seem to find where I run the speaker wire from the car to the door.

Hello-
Yes, I drilled a hole in the firewall and added my own grommet. That is best, through the steel plate that the steering column comes through and the master brake cylinder sits, then run the wire down the side of the car (easiest to loosen carpet kit there) and tuck the wires in, and then just follow the existing wiring along the back of the bench seat through to the back speakers. Should only take you 20 minutes to 30 minutes.

The links below (and the pages between them) is how I did my 91 240 sedan with 6x9s in rear package tray, 4"ers in front doors and a JL Audio amp in trunk. Should give you some ideas.

To do it right, is a bit of work, and 6x9 holes may not leave you metal to bolt speakers to, depending on year 240 and where you mount the 6x9s in the panel.

But it can be done.........and the sound is most rewarding......

I highly recommend bracing the car's metal package tray panel if using an amp & 6x9s, and might as well recarpet the fiberboard package tray panel while you have it out too for better appearance.

Better to drill a hole in the *plate* that *bolts to the firewall* on a 240, as it's already provided by where the hydraulic clutch M/C would be. pics of this in my thread I linked you to.

Where is the picture of that? I didn't see a picture of the firewall in your posts. By the way, your Volvo is beautiful.

The firewall on my '87 244 already had a blank in the large rubber grommet for puncturing. That's how I ran the hot lead for my subwoofer amp.

it's there. But here's pics separately.

How I ran amp 4 Ga acable to trunk is easily visible in the thread. Read & view the pics in the build thread to see how I did that. I ran RCA cables on pass side and amp cables on driver's side.

It requires a little longer kit ( I bought a 20' kit for 4 ga. and used @ 16.5 ft of it. Look through rest of build thread. There are picks of amp & rca wiring kits. Think I mentioned their lengths too.

This is looking between fender & brake M/C. The 2nd & 3rd pics need to be rotated to the left. My bad....

cable for amp comes out of FW's hyd. clutch MC hole(is unused on USA market 240s, we have cable operated clutch)for and under/between the upper strut tower and fender for protection like Volvo ran other wiring.

My 91 has a coil braket mount that I used to mount Amp fuse holder. Your 240 may differ a little here.

a true 4 Ga cable will likely not fit there. On my car I had 52mm gauge, and fog & driving light wirng I had already run into/through that hole.

OP what amp, HU and speakers (brand) are you going to use?

Thanks for the compliment. It wasn't easy to get things that clean.:omg:

I would consider a powered sub in the trunk over rear speakers. Crutchfield and I'm sure sonic have some affordable choices. Nice HU.

That HU only has 2 sets of preouts. Surprised ya didn't get one with 3 sets so ya could add sub if ya wanted later. My KW X896 has 3 sets.

Wont I only be using 2 sets? 1 set for the speaker amp and 1 for the subwoofer amp?

While I'm not a car stereo expert & I may be wrong/missing something here......but.....

Looks like your HU has a total of 4 RCA jacks, (2 front speaker channels & 2 rear speaker channels).....And so does your 4 channel amp. No problem there as long as only going to have 4 speakers/no sub IINM.

BUT...

Where is the third *additional one pair* of RCA cables on the HU for the sub amp's RCA cables to plug into?

Or am I misinterpreting something here?

For example:

My KW X 896 HU has three pairs of RCA jacks.

They are for two (L&R) front speakers & two (L&R) rear speakers for a total of 4 RCA jacks just for the 4 speaker channels........

And an additional two RCA jacks (one pair) for the sub amp's RCA cables to power one subwoofer. And my HU's third pair is marked as "SUB"

Maybe badvlvo can chime in for a stereo install expert's opinion.
