You're welcome. Rust and I have been co-habitating for years. Every time I think I finally found a rust free car, it pops up. You'd think it wouldn't be too hard living in California

Picked up a 531 today for $free.99. Score. It's in pretty decent shape, but will need some help where it mates to the block.

Exhaust ports are all in excellent shape, with little to no corrosion. Here's #4

Yummy

And the damage that'll need to be fixed

And just for anybody that's wondering, here's the difference between the block coolant passages and the 531 coolant passages. The bottom edge of the photo of the head matches up with the top of the photo of the block. Like you're folding a piece of paper.

Also-anybody know what this is? Looks like some sort of flywheel/rpm sensor in my B21. Has 3 wires coming off of them that terminate in a female connector. Odd.

Nice find! The sensor is basically a crank position sensor that was used with some sort of diagnostic machine the Volvo dealerships used to have.

Yeah-a guy on CL posted that he had some Penta stuff for sale-I called him up and talked a little. $150 purchase price, or he was willing to trade for a 530 I had in the basement. Win.

No K-cams though. And thanks for the info on the sensor. Cool stuffs.

It's not yet. The ground outside the shop is still too soft to push the car out-it's been raining for 3-4 days straight. Hopefully it'll dry out some towards the end of the week.

Well, I finally started work, which means I can finally make some headway. Still a little housekeeping left though.

So far, I've finished painting and clear coating the block, and tonight I got the first coat on the engine bay. I'll wet sand it and put a second coat on it tomorrow.

Yeah, she was helping

Block turned out better than expected.

Primered Up

Painted

Finally got the shop looking a little more proper :D

Have you done anything else since you painted the engine bay?

Well I'm heading to pick up my trans this weekend, and maybe some wheels.

I've been debating something, maybe I can get some insight here without cluttering up performance. I've been debating my decision to go with MS3x. A MS2 3.57 box would do what I need, and I could get it assembled for about $200 less than 3x. Brett was enlighening me about sequential MS (http://jbperf.com/)

My question is this: Are there any inherent benefits with MS3 that MS2v3.57 does not have? Added reliability? Anything of the sort?

Eventually, I'll get the exterior redone. I've always liked a gloss black engine bay. There are parts that aren't perfect, but I can deal. It looks very good to me. Not great, but very good.

Rustoleum Gloss Black Engine Enamel. Lowes had a good sale.

It's a lot of work. A lot. I'm pleased with it, but I wouldn't do it again. Part of my frustration was probably not having a paint gun, but it came out better than expected.

Any advice for the Megasquirt question? I've got an itchy trigger finger.

just rock the ms2 for now. if an SMD board isnt that much more expensive, roll with that.

pop in the ms3x board later.

what are your goals? what mods do you plan on using? a v3.0 board and ms1 chip are plenty for my wagon(250-350hp daily driver 8v....eventually), but i think i might go ms2 for the sedan if i ever get to upgrading it(16v, caged.....eventually). i think it's just more options(which you might not even use). i wouldn't worry about over complicating things unless you NEED those options, standard fuel install with wasted spark might be enough, and would be less time figuring things out and more time driving. those options look good in sigs, but if it's on jackstands who the f cares :P .

but back to ms3, someone posted all the benefits in a thread a few months ago, no idea what thread it was but it does look pretty baller. but i'm cheap and good enough is good enough for me
