Atom's Amazon Wagon Project Update Thread

Anyone else wondering if evolvo67 is having a craving for eating his hat now that he has seen the progress? :)

Dude, is it that important to you? As you can surmise from the fact that your rude comment was made on pg. 6 and the thread is now up to pg. 9 that I don't check in that often. Congratulations to Atom on making it happen.

Probably not. Some people just are not fans of chassis-swap projects because they feel that it violates some kind of brand-purity rule.

If you know anything about my car you'll know that brand loyalty is really not my thing either. My issue with the change in direction was simply my disappointment with how close the original project was to completion when I saw it at IPD. It's Atoms car and he can do as he wants, but from my perspective I saw hours and hours of time and energy and untold piles of $$$$ being lost.

Atoms response to the above quotes is spot on!

Look at the photo of the wiper transmission. The wipers don't care which direction the motor rotates, they are going to go back and forth either way! As long as the radius of the arm on the motor is the same as the original Volvo the stroke length will be the same.

As far as the park function. Just run the wiper motor without the arms mounted and then turn them off. Figure out which way they where going when they parked and mount the arms accordingly. IIRC the arms can be mounted either way, pointing left or right when parked.

Relocating the battery to the back. This will replace the battery in the stock location

Curious as to what you used to cut up the console? Doing some interior plastic changes on a OT project.

Regular cutoff wheel. You loose an eighth or so to kerf, but it?s easy to make straight cuts and when rejoining pieces, as long as you comp for the kerf it winds up ok.

Slower going because of the smaller wheel - but I've used a very thin cutoff wheel on a Dremel before to minimize that 'kerf'....

I used one (Dremel) on my GM dash piece and no matter how I tried (speed) it seemed to melt back together.
Hacksaw blade worked well.

The trick is clearing out the material while it?s hot (or not getting it hot) which in my experience means big cutoff wheel (4?+) so that the plastic is relatively cool by the time it comes back around, or large teeth w/slow speed (like wood cutting jig saw blade on the lowest speed the saw will run), large cut sweep. The cutoff wheel usually makes straighter cuts, but the saw needs less cleanup.

Out with the old...

Boring, I know. I’ve just got several things at 80% completion and I need to wrap stuff up. I want to focus on getting the engine bay wrapped up which means finishing sheet metal work, which means relocating the battery, oh and while I have the ECU out, I may as well do the Motronic 1.0 to 1.3 swap.

I think I’m going to paint the bay to match the cardinal interior. Might only be temporary, but for now at least. Like this....

(except not bright red)

Funnily enough, I was looking through an old photo album my parents had and turns out my dad had his “project car” parked in the same place mine is and they were kind of similar colors.

No pics of this weekend’s work. More boring stuff.
-Converted from 1.0 to 1.3 (that was actually more complicated than I thought)
-Relocated battery to hatch (Haven’t bolted it down just yet. Need to verify location)
-Converted to late model headlight switch (only for availability purposes)
-Thinned out the front harness and put Amazon ends on stuff so I can get the front lighting working.

I know all this doesn’t mean much to you guys, but what it means is that my car has a 9.7:1 compression M20B25 w/6500 redline and 174hp stock. I’m pretty sure that’s the highest HP E30 engine that wasn’t a homologation car (don’t quote me though)

It also means someone got rowdy with the RTV at some point. lol

Well, yeah. I don’t like the constant grey most of the year, but in the PNW when it IS nice out, it sure is beautiful. I just set up the pop up tent and try to get something accomplished each day.
