Turbo Swap?

Hi,

I'm new to posting on here. I have a 1996 945 with a B230FK and a M90 5-speed. Volvo called it the Volvo 940 II 2.3ti Kombi.
I live in Germany so any recommendations in the US are completely useless to me.

The Td04H-13C-6 recently died on my 940. I sent it in to get rebuilt and they quoted me over 600? (like 650+ US-D). I just don't see myself spending that much money on having that rebuilt. I need t get the car done sorta fast as I'm currently only using my bike and public transport to get around or my dad's car. So the solution needs to come somewhat fast and needs to be pretty affordable.

I am not trying to make huge power now but the 135PS are getting really boring. I know that the 15G turbos are a good alternative. I am thinking about it, if I can find one with a conical flange (Important!!). But the question I have is, whether I need to get the car tuned afterwards or if i can just slap it on and hit the road.

I know how to mount one of these 15Gs in the 9XXs so I probably won't need guidance on that.

Have you considered that a 15g and your 13c may have the same turbine wheels so they can use the same turbine housings?

But then again, as I am in the US per your post my recommendation is useless.

To be fair, I think he meant product purchases, or at least I hope so since everyone on here seems to be from the US

You can throw a bigger turbo on there with a manual boost controller and wide it up, will be fine for a while but won?t work well without supporting mods.

My 2 pence worth!

No, they cannot use the same turbine housings. While the 15G wheel will fit in a 13c housing, the back plate (?) on the 15G is larger vs. the back plate on the 13c. Thus, the 15G CHRA cannot be fully inserted into the 13c turbine housing.

To the OP, there are lots and lots of conversion threads here on Turbobricks:

Robert "Lucky" Arnold also made this nice YouTube video on how to rebuilt a TD04:

Hope this helps.

Makes me wonder which conical (!) housing I have in my 15g.

There are different versions of the 15G.

TD04H 15G fits onto stock volvo 13C turbine housings.
TD04HL 15G does not, altough converting to flat flange is very easy with a welder.

You don't necessarily need a tune afterwards but if you increase the boost it's wise to do so.
It's also important to have a look at your AFR if you increase the boost, so get a gauge unless you're only turning it up by 0,1 - 0,2bar.

I put a 16T in my 940 and along with the chips and the KL intercooler it's very nice upgrade to the 13C.

The turbo cost me 200€ if I remember correctly and a case of beer for a friend who welded the new flange on my downpipe (because the 16T uses a straight outlet).

If you find a 15G with conical outlet, just put it on and go.

Na, als ob die Amerikaner Marsmenschen w?ren.

A turbo is a turbo, my guy.

Also just saying, I bought my 16T on here (from Jonathan / swedishiron.com above) for way cheaper than anywhere in Europe even with shipping. :e-shrug:

There is a 15g for sale on here. I loved the 15g but got greedy and went to the 19T. They are easy to rebuild, plenty of youtube vids to go by if youve never done one before.
