Vancity Volvos

Mine is a '76, and came with a Maaco paintjob and quad squares and later manual mirrors, but I'm pretty sure it was an update by the previous owner. Part of what makes me shy about a swapped car comes from buying the V8 car- a swap someone else did. There was some work done by whoever did the swap on my '76 that makes me shake my head. Keep in mind, I'm a hack. It's bad when I can look and go "Wow, that's dumb."

Interesting. A quick search for owners manuals seems to indicate
that your car did come with quad rounds.

I hear what you are saying about swaps. I've doubled the
horsepower in my wagon, and reduced the resale value to scrap
price. $4000 worth of paint would likely add a few hundred bucks
to the resale. Just means I need to keep it.

Solid sheetmetal and nice paint is worth quite a few bucks on a seventies 240 though. I'm getting on the wrong side of that lately.
Agreed on that. Speaking of which... remember the rear door I was hoping to grab? Got two? Stan got hit and run on the driver's side rear door a couple of months ago so both sides match :-(

M.

I do have two rear doors. I need to hack out some metal from the
trailing edges, so I'd need the "cores" in return.

I'm not sure when the latches changed, but I suspect it was
pre-'78. Plan for some adaptation. (Or research me wrong). There
is a Volvo TSB about upgrading to the newer latches out there.

If you want to come by and do the swap here at some point, I'd be
happy to help.

I haven't worked on that project in months, but it is on my
"critical path", so it would be better to do this sooner.

I should go work on that thing now...

Sounds good. I've gotta get a paint code for Stan and pick up a quart. I don't think Naomi would be too cool about Harlequin paint schemes. :)

Mark,

It's that blue metallic color, right? IIRC, that would be either code 111 or 126. 111 is the sky blue metallic, whereas 126 is the color of the mmmAllvo 264.

Nah, it's the solid blue, like this.

I was talking to the painter at work, and he said that some
Lordco locations have a kind of scanner that can match paint to
the de facto color of your car, which can be more accurate than a
paint code after four decades of fade and wear.

You probably want to cut and polish it first to get it as clean
and fresh as possible.

They will put it in a spray can too, but you have gear, so that's
moot.

Paint is a big part of the reason I haven't hacked into my rust
yet.

Yeah, it's a slippery slope... especially with Stan, because if I'm painting the doors, well, I might as well patch the quarterpanel rust... Oh and the dent in the buttcheek might as well get banged out, and since I'm doing that, better fix those little quarter panel dings from whatever was bouncing around in the trunk and that chip on the hood and...

Cue to several week later where Stan is completely disassembled and on a dolly and I'm doing a full paint job.

In the meantime, I pulled the doorcard off and kicked the worst of the dent out and polished out the leftover paint, so it looks less abused.

And now.

"Well, it's on the dolly, might as well do that transmission swap... And I've got this 13c just laying around... and this LH 2.2..."

Well, the Snot Rocket got punched in the face the other day.

Nothing damaged beyond sheet metal, plastic and some nice Hellas.

A lady in a black Eclipse turned left in front of me. I think she
hit the wrong pedal, or seriously misjudged things. ICBC found
her at fault, so I'll get something for it eventually.

Does anyone local happen to have a pre-1986 240 parts car or
scrap car at the moment? I could use some donor sheet metal. I
think I can probably find most of the rest of the stuff I need in
the crawlspace.

Hopefully I can get enough out of ICBC to get the paint taken
care of properly once the metal is back to the right shape.

I had just put brand new all-seasons on two days prior, so I
wouldn't slide into anything this winter.

^Got a passport? Suspect you'll find a lot of what you need at Rainbow Auto Service in Bellingham or at Northwest Auto Recyclers in Lake Stevens. Northwest has an orange '75 244DL that went out recently and Rainbow has a bunch of 1975-85 240's in their yard.

Sorry to hear that Sim. Unfortunately I don't have anything to help. If you can't find stuff at a yard or off Turbobricks Schrams may be able to help you.

Are you looking for a left front fender, bumper and front support?

support?

The worst bits are the "tool tray" piece across the top of the
rad, the sheet metal right behind the bumper, and the metal
behind the headlights.

The fender has a simple dent behind the marker light that looks
like it will pound out. I have a decent orange fender for that
side otherwise.

The bumper has a nice gash on top, and the rubber is damaged, but
is otherwise not too bad, I don't think the shock was even
compressed, but I haven't measured it yet.

The hood is just a little folded in on the corner, I may be able
to salvage it.

So the worst of it will be hidden behind the headlight assemblies
and grille. If I can restore the positions of the mounting
points, it won't be too bad.

Thanks for the Washington suggestions, but I'm not willing to
cross the border. Chilliwack PNP seems to have a few newer 240s
in stock, maybe I'll call around the other yards this weekend.

Maybe this will be the motivation I need to finally fix up the
rusty areas on the car. It's going to need paint, so I might as
well do it all.
