Default lug nut size is???

I have a 90 Volvo 240. Everywhere I look including here says the lug size is 1/2x20. So I ordered that size and they are not right. So, went to parts store they said 1/2x 20 too. So I went and pulled a couple off in the parking lot. Upon them checking them we figured out they are M12x1.50? Now that I am home I checked a few more the same. I was not aware that Volvo 240 came with that size or did someone swap all them out? Thanks for any help.

Volvo 240 always came with a 1/2 x 20 thread on the wheel studs. The lug nuts on your car are 12x1.5 because someone previous to you crushed on the wrong lug nut which is for a 740 onto your car. It can happen if you don't know that the Volvo metric lug nuts are marked with a round ring around the lug nut top. The lug nuts for a 240 are smooth along the top of the nut and are /1/2x20.

The other possibility is that someone put metric wheel studs on your car. I would get out a thread gauge and start checking the wheels studs to see what thread they are. They also need to be inspected to see if the threads are ruined anyway. Also check your lug nuts to see if they have the round ring on the top of them.

All Volvo 240s in the US use 1/2X20 TPI studs. 7/9 series Volvos use the 12mm studs.

You're not the first person to have this happen to them, unfortunately. But it's not the end of the world, either.
