Can anybody explain the reasoning behind fitting the redblock afm into a 3"pipe and does anyone have pics of it done ?

A few different reasons, more air flow is one key, larger pipe allows more air for and less restriction.
Other (main reason) is for scaling of larger injectors in LH 2.4. Many people have run up to 42lb/hr injectors on the stock AMM with good fueling. For larger injectors than that (46-75lb) people typically run the larger AMM to help the ECU scale for the larger injectors. Very much not ideal but many here have proven that it works good if you keep the car running well.
