bolted stuff up to the new engine (jy late b230ft), to see how things were going to play out with the oil cooler and all that.. and it doesn't (yet)

this was somewhat expected, however, and isn't the end of the world. I need to take some measurements and see if I can run the downpipe over the top and down the back (pleeeeezzzz), if I can do that, then I should be able to modify the motor mount (or build one) bracket, and just drop the whole extension assembly down an inch or so.

Since I grabbed an entire shortblock (+trans), I have extras of all of these things, so getting it drop-in ready should not be a big problem. (famous last words). I think I'll try my hand at building a tensioner using 8v stuff, we'll see though.

I also ordered all the MS3 stuff for it. so, it'll get the brief LH treatment, and then some ms love.

dang, been a while since I updated this. Gotta go with the bad first (and finish on a good note, eh? ;) )
stupid volvo stupid a/c braket stupid a/c stupid heater core. Sounds worse than it is (well, not really I guess)-tensioner bracket broke off at the accy mount on the a/c compressor. not sure what caused that. need to take that off and take the belt off for the time being, since the compressor clutch doesn't hold. ****er.

THEN I noticed an antifreeze smell coming out of the hvac when the heat is on and it's in recirc. no wet floors yet, but I fear that's coming. Fortunately I was already plagued by a leaking hvac diaphragm that will require disassembly of 3/4's of that **** anyway, so I'll just pop a new core in there while I'm doing all that other horse**** with the time I don't have. Probably just going to pull the whole climate box out, r&r everything, clean the a/c coils up real purty like, re-flush the a/c system when I pull the 8v head off and replace the orifice tube at the same time. this car WILL have good a/c damnit.

ok, the good:
I've got a metric ton of **** floating around waiting for the 16v swap. Probably going to do it in a couple of stages since time is an issue right now: MS3 will go on along with all the sequential **** to make it work, I'll spend some time lovin' on that, and see if I can't get this bag of **** to do better than 16mpg. the evo does better than that and it gets ****ty mileage after it's last re-tune (on purpose. ****ty mileage is defined as 24ish highway and about 17-18 city. occasionally dropping to 2. ok, more than occasionally but still)

so to these ends:
I've got all the gaskets, hardware, etc waiting, along with injectors. I went ahead and ordered the cas adapter, tensioner kit, crank gear from josh and I'm told the valve relief tool will be coming with it
I still should order up the oil filter relocation stuff (I could just not run the oil cooler stuff and it would probably be ok, but I like easy oil changes), as well as the oil feed and return stuff for the turbo, and naturally the exhaust items that will go along with that switchover.

so, recap:
stage 1 - ms3 swap and tune, familiarize myself with the world of sequential
stage 2 - 16v head swap onto current motor (will just have to limit the total amount of fun for the time being)
stage 3 - tougher bottom end, i.e. upgraded rods. we're not shooting for the moon here, just good peace of mind.

throughout this I also plan to be able to swap back to LH at least briefly and do some 16v tuning there & see what I can come up with.

more toys for the green car

crank steered ftw, gigiddy. got the pistons in the engine on the stand cut, just need to budget some time to do the ones in the car, and kick the tool back to josh.

did a mileage check last night after sam adjusted the kickdown cable ~ week ago, picked up 2 mpg over about half a tank. bliing. we'll see how this next tank treats me, but the ms3 swap looms near.

Did he loosen it allowing it to stay in a higher gear with more throttle or tighten it?

Ah, yep. I used to set mine tight but the looser setting allows it to stay at lower rpm with greater throttle openings for better efficiency. If I want it to hold a gear, I have the shifter and OD lock-out for that. Your car may not have the OD lock-out, though.

well, 20 seems to be the upper limit without resorting to retard driving habits, at least with the driving I have going on now (almost all city, but some stretches longer than others. my morning commute I'm quite sure is hugely detrimental to any kind of baller mpg's, since it's a little over a mile door to door).

Time and motivation are factors. I suspect if I dorked around with the ezk some I might be able to bump that number a little, but if I could find the time to do the few odd things I want to do with it (nothing big, just a 16v head swap, 200 series aux shaft and sequential ms3, and eventually the evo 8 16g), I think between the move to the new house and all of the above I could comfortably get 26ish city without having to sandbag like a faggot.

a great day of work looms imminent, got in the car last night and noticed the carpet was soaked on the driver's side :sigh:

oh well, I've known the heater core was suspect for a while, and I've gotta replace one of the vacuum modulators in the heater box. now I just need to work it in such that it requires removal of the cylinder head :cough:

I guess I'm not a car guy then because I ****ing detest even doing maintenance on my Skoda Felicia. I guess if I daily drove a 240 it would be a different story...

cool read. I'm late to the party but I learned a bit! I also have a really tight kickdown cable and **** mpg's. I'm going to have to adjust mine because it's kicking down into 3rd everytime I get over 45mph. I also only got about 245miles on a half tank and I was trying to baby it. Not too bad but when you have an 18gallon tank and a $75 fillup with premium every little bit helps.

ok, making time to play with my stuff finally. decapitating this thing tonight after work to cut the valve reliefs (it may or may not go back together 8v tonight, remains to be seen. probably will for a couple of reasons), might look at the a/c as well, gotta get that going now that we've entered the melt your ass off part of the calender.

got the head off and the reliefs cut last night, took longer than I wanted. bout an hour and 15 to get the head off :sigh: I'm getting slow in my old age.

I think I'll just skip the shenanigans and just slap a 16v head on there & move on

I was under the impresson that the 16V heads required a lot more work to get running and the time/cost wouldn't be worth it when compared to what you can make out of an 8V head?? Have I been mislead or are you a ninja and already have everything you need?
