"Brick in a box" - (1991) 245 "stealth" project car

Replaced the links, hopefully they work now...

In any event, I put together a dyno day for the local volvo guys after Cars and Coffee. Other than somebody breaking down multiple times  , we had a nice scenic cruise over to the shop. Unfortunately it's not an awd dyno, so not everyone was able to participate, but then again this is Turbo bricks, not turbo "fwd based fragile awd system always broken" haha.

The original plan was to wire in a Saab APC while at C&C......that didn't end up working out, so It was running on wastegate pressure in the video which is basically 5 psi (it briefly touches 6 and then back to 5 till redline) Turbo likes impersonating a diesel, haha
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cWnuDMcmXEU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
166/218

Then a wild MBC appears....
The dyno operator asked for the max rpm/boost level I wanted to run, I told him 6k and 10-12 psi since I don't have a wideband (was hoping the APC would provide a measure of security) and it's still stock LH2.4. (no chips). Well, that' didn't exactly go as planned...

As you can see, he had to stop the fun early, on account of overboost, it blew past 10 psi and showed no signs of slowing @ 15 so he had to let off. In fact, we probably did about 10 consecutive runs as we tried to get the MBC dialed in (Cliff notes: MBC suck and I won't be running one long term). That never happened, but it did hit 232/296 on an aborted run very similar to those pictured above.

Went to the junk yard, and much to my surprise they had a decent selection (90' 245 --92' 244-- 84 242 turbo -- and a couple turbo 740's)

After doing some research, I've decided to go with the garret t25, the unit on this car was in excellent condition (minimal left to right, and zero in-and-out shaft play) I guess that shouldn't be surprising with only 105k. The mitsu might spool a little faster, but with high compression, and a 90+ manifold, I doubt it will be a problem. Plus, it looks like I can swap over the compressor/wheel from a spare RX-7 HT-18 turbo. It's good for about 230-240 @ 12-15 psi on a rotary. Given that rotaries like a LOT of air, it should at least make 250+ in this application.

Also, picked up most of a black interior, turbo power mirrors, and a cool "Diplomat Edition" velvet booklet out of the turbo 740 wagon

On the way back home however, I noticed temps start to rise, and all the idiot lights came on.......snapped alt/wp belt ;-( Fortunately I already had the replacements in the car, so I just changed them at the gas station. However while doing so, I noticed that the alt mounting point seems to be broken, I tightened it until it started to bend the adjustment bolt, but within a few miles it was loose again. Also, the watever pump seems to be bad, so we can add that to the list.

That's crazy, a decent 242 with the doors still on, bumper trim and that grille. The fact that someone wrecks a 242 in the first place is just sad and weird since they are valuable here. But then if someone wrecks one they keep the doors, take off the black bumper trim.. and other parts usually.

Looks like a nice build! :)

Unfortunately I didn't know quite how rare (especially in that condition) 242's were, at the point where I found that one. Otherwise i would have stripped the thing bare, for the good of the community.

Thanks! I'm trying to get all the mechanical components sorted, so I can focus on non-important things like paint, audio and interior, lol

Then you could go pay for your own parts at the junk yard :rof:

I'm sure it has happened. I heard a story yesterday of a guy I know that gambles with his own disc golf discs and will lose his whole bag and then ask to use his stuff from the guy he just lost em to... wow.

Dyno day was fun, especially when boost took off like a runaway train! However response wasn't everything it could be, and it takes a few revs to really get into boost, but that's the price you pay for a 2.25" downpipe, or rather......paid. Out with the old, and in with the new! Thanks to the fab skills of Mr.Brown!!!

I smelled burning oil tonight. I wondered, where is that coming from, and about 10 minutes later, I was at a stop light next to the bloke driving a BMW that was smoking from underhood and knocking. It was him. I yelled to him "She's gonna blow!!!" and he looked at me with a funkyouiknow look....

Don't be that guy!?

HAHA! no worries there, I'm the "Do it right the first time" and "It may not be pretty but it's mechanically sound" voice of reason among my friends. I'll be installing a wideband soon, but I haven't even detected the slightest sign of ping as of yet

The old setup.
Seemed to work fine, and the light brown tint on the turbine wheel (and absence of shaft play) suggest that was actually the case.

Got the new wastegate bolted on and added some heat sheilding for the rubber lines subjected to turbo temperatures

Things have changed have they not??
I have carefully thought out things and researched them first then mock up and test and finally, make it pretty. Well, in theory since I'm not finished with the current project/nessecary turn on events.

Your process certainly has  However, (and I know this may be painful to consider) I do have other car friends ...cough...RasJahmen cough cough, RX-& Guys, cough......

In addition to the downpipe I had to add the "Ghetto Fab" clearanced cross member as well, as always, a pain to get installed.

Apparently the ebay .63 A/R turbine housing the DP was originally designed for does not have the same dimensions as the stock Volvo .63 housing,so we were left with a small delima. Rather than cut the tab and have it re-welded (still a possibility for the future I suppose) I used what was available...

Continuing with the Old school flair I installed the (apparenlty uncommon) OEM volco metal splash pan, since I was already down there, and I was going to be taking a road trip soon.

Awful lotta coughing going on......hahaha.

So i guess I'm missing the tab that bolts the down pipe to the bell housing...makes sense now why there wasn't a flex pipe or more hangers in the first place
