Before I pulled the distributor, I unplugged the 2 wire connector on the side and added 12vts to one side and put a test light on the ICM side, then did it again on the other and found both sides are flowing current so wiring i think is fine.

My distriubtor number is 0 237 002 039
does anyone know if I can use distributor 0 237 002 038?

Yeah, it should work. 039 is for '78 California models only, 038 fits '78 excluding California and '79-'81.

BTW, the reluctor arms got bent from turning the engine over with the distributor cap off. One or both of the clips for the cap made contact with the reluctor and bent the arms.

Also, new reluctors aren't that expensive.
