I have a newly acquired toy. '84 NA 4spd. Currently has a B cam but no other engine mods, runs great, very nice shape.

But of course I can't leave anything alone. Would you:

-find a 530 ported head (you got one?), swap in the B cam, thin cometic gasket
-bolt on the 531 head I have access to, Bcam, with Cometic gasket
-do nothing, NA motors suck, gotta boost it bro

Other ideas? Not interested in turbo and have very realistic expectations of what I could get out of a NA motor.

It makes little sense to port/upgrade heads if you are going to use a B cam in my opinion. It would be a different story on a high CR engine with a decent (non volvo) camshaft. (Also the $ aspect ofcourse)

You have to ask yourself what your goals are and what you want to spend.

83 manual was high compression (flat top pistons).

84 manual was low compression (dished pistons). :(

with the low compression motors, boost is the way to go although as Carl pointed out, you can have some amount of fun NA.

I understand 84 was a split year - b23 with higher compression, then b230 with lower compression later in the year. Of course I’m no expert...
