FYI- recently replaced both engine block temp sensors without having to remove the air intake.
Remove the distributor cap. Remove plastic air intake hoses (with MAP), IAC with associated rubber hoses and the small vacuum hoses on the air intake. Also disconnected the wires to these and the (4) injector wires. I pulled the injector wires out from the back of the air intake area. This all allowed me enough room to get a small ratchet on the front temp sensor (dash gauge) and I used an extra long extension with a socket to get at the rear temp sensor (ECU). Only a few cups of coolant come out of the holes when the sensors were removed.
The bad ECU (rear) engine coolant temp sensor was an attributing to factor the hard cold starts we were having.
Note: FCP sells an inexpensive replacement for the gauge coolant temp sensor that was not listed as such on their site. This part was much less expensive than the other OEM part listed. FCP part # FAE 460191 at only $5.49 USD

The other engine coolant temp sensor part is # (S) 1346030, SKU#HEL-009107501 at $21.09 USD. looks like it went up $10 since a month ago.. WOW I paid $10.09. Capitalism at it's finest.
