So, I've had like six old 240's and a 740, but it's been damn near a decade ago since I had one. Bought a 93 240 awhile back, and did the usual timing and tuneup etc etc that they all need, and it has a noise. I swear I've heard the noise before on one of these cars but I can't remember which, and if there was ever any resolution.
Noise sounds like it's at idle crank speed not cam, only audible at idle and maybe slighty above while sitting still, it's a tokka-tokka-tokka-tokka but very rapidly and audible but not omg loud, and it is extremely dependent on ambient temp, I seem to hear it in the cabin from behind the center of the dash and can't really hear it outside the car due to other noise. I don't believe it was audible at all in the summer, was very faint on a 60F day recently, and was quite loud at 8 below zero the other week, does not seem to vary with engine temp. I've put enough miles on it that if it was going to explode it would have by now(239K no smoke no oil use feels like any other old stock NA b230), and I'd normally guess piston slap but I had an 87 with a hell of a case of that and it didn't sound anything like this.
I *think* one of my 86's had this noise, and I never came up with anything and just ignored it. Ring a bell to anyone? I was going to put it on the lift and run it and listen next time I have it up.
