Mike K? ruin another volvo. 945 pickup build

I was disgusted the first time I looked at prices for those. I was toying with diesel-swapping the 300TE and figured they'd be as cheap as 617's, but no. You'll spend more on an engine that on a parts car.

Those, and 603's

Why? Bigger turbo, more fuel pressure, and bam, 35 mpg and easy 13s.

I've never owned a diesel so here's my assumptions: stinky, noisy, clattery, dirty, unsmooth, powerbands I don't like.

it's like the total opposite of that glassy smooth toyota motor, in my mind (which, btw, I already have in the yard!)

you are not alone, I am not a fan of diesels myself. Stinky loud af moneypits. The fuel is more expensive too. The prices for parts is absurd. I don't even like filling up at the combined gas/diesel pump, everything is covered in smelly black goo.

A modern diesel can be an awesome highway cruiser - smooth, quiet, and un-stinky. And as Harald is illustrating, they can make great power too. But I think it may not be the best choice for your intended use case for the El Camin940 anyway - a 2JZ I'm sure will do the forest road bombing job very well. Not trying to change your mind about this car, just offer some different perspective on what diesels can do. Now that they are a dying breed I think in a few years we'll be talking about them like people reminisce about 2-stroke street bikes.

I think I have my tongue farther into my cheek than you guys realize :-P

Actually my Dad is all hot on the idea of buying Mom an SQ5 diesel and I think it's a good pick

now you got me thinking, maybe I should follow thru with the ute conversion on an 88 765 I picked up for $100. I already cut the rear 1/3 of the roof off since a tree had fallen on it years ago. Might as well keep going on it. 2JZ sounds cool too since it needs a new engine/trans.

Is there such a thing as a diesel SQ5??

Actually there is no SQ5 diesel.
The SQ5 is only available with the 3.0 supercharged gas engine.
There's a Q5 S line diesel, which is almost there.

S Line get's you the sport seats some of the suspension goodies, flat bottomed wheel etc..
It's sort of like the BMW M Sport package, not an M3 or M5, but a lot of the looks and goodies without the balls out package.

The 3.0 TDI has around 425 pound feet of torque on an 8 speed trans.
That'll move the little SUV along...

Hell?,
Vary naice build. Thank you for sharing.
I have lifted Volvo 745, 5 cm front and rear with 27" A/T tires on original 15" steelies. Now also with 25 mm spacers for no rubbing on full turn.
Rear is lifted with hockey pucks (2 pucks = 5 cm) pressed into 4,8 cm long 3" pipes, also drilled new holes for shocks in rear arms. Front is sawed in two then welded with 5 cm pipe in between of same girth. Made 4.something spacers in pipe for shocks to rest on in bottom. Did chamber mod. Otherwise arm under to short. Original springs.
I like much. Maybe inspire, maybe frighten?

Hi, and thanks! I like that ride height and setup, does not look too exaggerated. I have not yet decided if I will lift the car, but do want to get more tire under it like you have. The more utility I can add to the car the more I will enjoy it.

Actually spent a good portion of the weekend in the car with my Dad and he reminded me I've been letting the truck sit unloved in his greenhouse for too long - hey at least it's covered. I've got a reasonably short and doable list of things To Do in order to finish off some things that were left half finished, and those will make it a little more ready for DD type duties. Plan now is to get through all of my house/property work with what's left of the Fall, then pull the truck in and give it some lovin.

Isn't it funny how you can both love a car and hate it at the same time? I usually hate these wagon turned into pickup trucks but I honestly love this.

^^What he said, usually these pickup conversions are just awful looking. This one is dam nice though!

many thanks, really appreciate it. In many ways these kinda comments mean more to me than all of the praise the 242 gets, since we made a lot more decisions surrounding how the thing would look.

Just realized the dates of last posts! Definitely time to get it back in the garage and do something with it besides haul stuff around. Thanks for the motivation!

The build quality/attention to detail here is really impressive. It's also nice to see I'm not the only one who hasn't thrown their Adharas in the trash.

I love everything about this project.

are those 22" AC Schnitzer Type 2 in the bed?

thanks guys!

I wish they were that legit! They are 22x9 Lexani R-4's I run on my wife's XC60.

Also the bump is well timed because I am going to let the 242 sleep in it's bag for once this winter and get this thing back in the garage. Just need to scrap out an old SAAB then we can get this back in and give it the love it deserves. Basic plan is to finish off the bed, finish some off the more fiddly weather proofing/water management work, start working towards and interior... and then I imagine a lot of hemming and hawing as we consider going back into body work. Basically the "proof of concept" worked, I really enjoy it, time to finish it properly!

Wee need updates!

I vote for 2" lift and 215/70 R15's.

As for potential diesel swap, from what I now know, I'd steer clear of Mercedes engines. Heavy and too expensive for what they are.
Did you get BMW M51D25's in the US? It's like D24, just better, and it takes great to mechanical injection pumps. M57D30 commonrail is another viable option for those that like too-modern diesels.
I'm currently toying with a V6 TDI 2.5 out of '05 A6 in the back of my shed...
