Toyota R154/R155 to red Block

I contacted dellow before and they said they have never made a bell housing for r154 trans for b21/b23/b230 engines. It could of been the guy I spoke to didn't have prior knowledge. He did say they could make one for the w series transmissions w57/w58.

Hi all

Thank you all for the info. I seen the post MikiK about fitting a R154 behind a red block. The R155 I have has a 160 mm long input sharft compared to R154 190 mm input sharft. So using a red block bellhousing and adaptor isn't a option

The R150 from a 2006+ Hilux with the 1GR engine has a 190mm input shaft. The gearboxes from the other petrol and diesel engines have the 160mm shaft as you mention. The 1GR gearboxes also have a slightly better first gear ratio although still shorter than ideal.

I have an R150 adapted to a B230 mounted vertical. It uses a redblock bellhousing with the input shaft hole bored out to the appropriate diameter to centre the gearbox and an adapter in between. Shifter ends up about 50mm further forward than ideal, requires the floor being clearanced for the driveshaft and a good hammering to make the transmission tunnel wider.

You should investigate the gearboxes from the Holden Collorado's though. Its of the same basic form as the R154, input shaft may be longer based off what I have read online. Shifter is slightly further forward yet again compaired to a R150. The Collorado boxes are a lot cheaper than the hilux boxes though and also the gear ratios are better.

If you already have a R155 with the shorter shaft and want to make it work with added strength and better ratios there is a company that looks like they can supply an appropriate gearset with the longer input shaft https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Speedtek-Racing-Close-Ratio-1JZ-Gearset-R154-800hp-Toyota-Gearbox-2JZ-1J-2J-R151/254137661665

Hi Volvo244GLE

The box I have the box that came from the 05 onwards 2wd hilux with the 2.7lt petrol. It comes the 160 mm input sharft
1st 3.954:1
2nd 2.062:1
3th 1.436:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.805:1

The M47 in my 740Ti has
1st 4.03:1
2nd 2.16:1

The M47 doesn't have the best ratios for a 740Ti with 3.54:1 diff gears but the R155 has better ratios

The R155 box has common conversion of a 190mm input sharft from R154 to replace the over priced R154 in the toyota community

Thank you for you saying you have a upright adaptor plate but unless I do a 16 valve conversion it won't be helpful but I will keep it In mind can the adaptor be copy easily?

The same principal I used to make an adapter for a vertical mount could be used for a conventional slanted mount. Adapter would actually be easier for a slanted mount from memory. That said, it's not at any easy DIY level.

To fit an r154 or variant there of to a 740 would require a remote shifter mount version as the shifter needs to be quite far back. All in all, a r155 isn't a good starting point.

It would be much easier to do a t5 gearbox as the versions we got in Australia are actually better than the US ones in terms of putting the shifter in the right location in a 740. Read about it by searching for the thread "Ford AU T5 gearbox conversion into 1986 740T Automatic" on OZVolvo forum.

Hi Volvo244GLE

I would beg to differ the R155 isn't a good option these boxes are used behind Toyota 1JZ-FE 2JZ-FE and the Toyota V8 1UZ-FE with the power output these engines make

There is a long shifter option

There is the remote shifter

And the best thing is the they around $500 from most wrecking yards

You completely missed the point, I didn't mention power handling. There is no doubt that they are a pretty strong box.

You have demonstrated my point by picturing an AR-5 and an r154. Yes there are boxes in the general 'family' of gearboxes that have various input shaft lengths and shifter positions. The r155 is not the best choice of the 'family' for a 740 application due to its shorter input shaft and shifter position. Something like an AR-5 might be a better choice otherwise depending on your DIY ability and amount of money you want to throw at it, a t5 may be a better option
