Had some a/c issues this week with house and loaded the car up and went to in-laws, dog, cat , baby, supplies, and we took the g6 too. On the way the turbo feed hose separated, and killed the oil supply to turbo, and killed the turbo. If you ever have heard the sound, you know what that death moan means when you hear it trying to spool. So i wiped the cobwebs off my highly modified 70mm turbo, and installed it, new oil line and pulled intercooler out to clean, forgetting totaly that 7-10 years ago when i pulled turbo off my supra, it needed a oil seal for hot side. So it spools faster than the 60/62 did, and hits so much harder at much less boost. I also went from a twin scroll 70 a/r to a single scroll on center 69 a/r on hotside. This on center housing now resting where the off center housing used to be moved the turbo much closer to wastegate, so now i need to configure a new exhaust pipe and o2 placement. I may put the 02 sensor before the turbo. We will see .Unfortunately it was raining outside and at 5psi of boost the car goes sideways at 55 mph, so no more testing was done today, and for good reason. No o2 sensor feedback and i know it needs to be retuned from the drastic difference i already felt.So the bad is everytime it spools down and come to a stop a bit of smoke billows out of the turbo for 5 seconds and its fine again. Oil seal on hot side. So i pulled it back off and pulled it apart and robbed a oil seal from one of my bad 60/62, which even with a ruined cartridge, never smoked (when there was oil pressure in the feed hose). Haven't had a chance to test other than a quick line lock/ power boost in the garage, with no oil smoke after. So it looks promising. Here's some pictures.Damage
More damage to hood. And 70mm is on.
D8 bulldozer exhaust wheel, clipped and hole drilled out and welded to a t4 large shaft.Majestic turbo of waco initially built this back in 03 for a drag honda when i was working at Alamo autosports i got it cheap and used it on my Built Supra.
Difference between a 60/62 and a 70mm with a d8 bulldozer exhaust wheel.Look at the 70mm shaft closely , they even routed it down where it was welded! Pretty trick.
Pesky oil ring lying on chair, new /used one from 60/62 on t70 shaft.
Indexed the two impellers before taking apart to make sure balance was fine. Typically with larger frame turbo's, you don't need to balance them if there is no damage, and you keep them indexed. That's what two turbo rebuild shops told me, but i haven't verified with anyone else.
