if i switch the car over to synthetic and then it starts to leak all over the place, is there any downside to just switching back to conventional oil? will the leaks that were held tight with conventional oil reseal themselves or will i have oil leaks forever once the detergents clean stuff out?

Run your first oil change with the mobil1 high mileage stuff and its supposed to recondition seals err something then got regular after that.

check bobistheoilguy.com

Been running Mobile 1 in my 98 V90 and she doesn't use but 1 quart between the changes I do at intervals of 7000 miles with not one drop leaking. Motor has 162K on it.

If your seals are in good shape, no worries. If never been changed/old as hell, they are most likely leaking now with dino oil.

Are You talking transmission fluid or motor oil. cause i wouldn't bother with synthetic in the slush box unless it brand new. as far as motor oil. Pick your oil And stuck with it don't go swapping brands and synthetic non synthetic Valvoline then to another brand. makes acid in the oil system. i personally like running delo 15w-40 good thick cleans your engine. but i wouldn't recommend if you have lots of sludge it can cause pickup tube to get clogged.

no< i was talking motor oil... i don't have a clue when the seals were replaced... it's not leaking now with dino oil, but i don't really want to change to synthetic only to have oil leaks all over the place.

on my 300k mile 240, i threw redline mtl(is that synthetic?) in my m47, still works great. i tried plain jane mobil1 synthetic in the motor and it developed a rod knock(mostly at idle and under high torque - off clutch), i got scared and threw in dino oil and it went away. 4-5 years later, no knock, still on dino oil

basically, it's worth trying, if something doesn't seem right after switching, swap back :e-shrug:

No issues at all and the oil leak stories are over rated. I swapped over several cars, all with well over 100k miles on them, over to synthetic motor oil and the few leaks I got were minor and just required a sight turn of a bolt/nut. The mileage improvements I experience using synthetic motor oil are consistant make it worth the expense. If you don't like it, swap back to regular oil. No big deal.

So you are saying your engine has been washed off very good, and the engine is very clean, so you can actaully tell if the cam,Intermediate shft/frt main seal, and rear main seal is not now leaking?

Or... are you saying it does not leave big puddles of oil in the driveway from sitting overnight?

Reason I ask is i've had quite a few 240 ownwers say their car's engine has no oil leaks, but when I raise the hood, I don't see how they could really tell, as everything is coated in oil.

If engine is oily/dirty, wash it off with Gunk and rinse with soap & water at the car wash. then drive it a week & inspect for oil leaks. I'd be willing to bet it has some.

If you do not know if the seals were ever replaced, you my want to think about replacing them. About 150,000 miles is when it's due IME.

i'm saying it does not leave big puddles of oil in the driveway from sitting overnight... prior to relocating the PCV it was dumping puddles each night and dripping constantly. At this point it's not, but the grease, dirt and grime make it impossible to really tell. What if i wash it all off and the car falls apart

Then they are probably already leaking. washing it off isn't gonna hurt it. Hopefully your MEWH is Ok, but it's probably toasted by now too, if it's OEM.

So why worry about syn oil leaking? It's leaking dino now.

MEWH? Motor Electrical Wiring Harness???? Should be great - just got a new fresh built one in last week! the old stock one looked horrible.

MEWH= main engine wiring harness. I see 86-87 240s with bad ones. Most original ones are well toasted by now. washing at car wash with bad MEWH can be a problem.

If it's been replaced, you are good to go on th engine degrease job. Cover dizzy with plastic bag, and take a few dry towels just in case. Give that 240 engine a nice hot bath

I despise a dirty engine, clean that thing up. Purple power and a garden hose on a pretty sunny day work very well too. Good time to make sure the rocker/cowl drains are open as well. Try and not soak electrical stuff any more than you have to, if it does not start back up, let it dry a few hours and try again.
