The Beige Bounce Back - Vol242vo's 242

Thanks Adam and Dave!

I plan to do the same for every nook of the car, not necessarily NEW but clean, not too concerned about the imperfections of the paint. It’ll get a nice claybar and wax this next summer to bring the beige back a bit but other than that most of the attention will be under the hood and suspension components.

I remember your last beige one, I always loved how clean the engine bay looked, shame it never really got going.

This one looks like it's headed in the right direction! Keep us posted!

Agreed. My '78 was, to this day, a regret. I was pretty stoked when this one popped up on Craigslist here.

Looking forward to seeing it progress

Thanks! It’s slow moving but had some time to see what I’m up against with the floorboards...I’ve found a heat gun and putty knife work the best for removing sound deadener. They're in a little worse shape than I had hoped but it’ll get sorted out.

Driver side rear looks good, just a little surface rust.

Previous owner went all out on a nice audio system...regretfully, it was removed.

Hahaha that speaker

Dash looks real good! If you would leave the kicker panels out (in the center) it's kind of a pre runner of the current center consoles.

Nothing exciting, just keeping progress updated here. Hopefully not to get Photo****et’d again...

Moving on to the passenger side, looks a lot better than the drivers side, plenty of metal after some wire brushing. The rear looks good, I don’t to plan to bother with the sound deadening there. I’m not planning on breaking any kind of records soon and wouldn’t mind the added noise barrier. I’ll be adding more after the rust is COMPLETELY treated.

The car came with 2 mismatched seats, the blue vinyl seat's foam was in really good shape and the grey cloth seat skins were in better shape than the others, so a quick tear down, run through the wash, and I had one decent seat until I find some older recaros.

i had a 242 in college. i wish i had that car back. 242's have just about disappeared from the southeast US. But im waiting and watching for one to show up. Until then i will live vicariously through your build thread. That means you must keep working and posting pictures. :-P

Haha, sounds good man. I know what you mean, I had a ?78 242 that I should have never sold. Fortunately, they still pop up for sale around here every once in awhile. Thanks for the compliment, more to come!

Removed all of the bumper trim and trunk seal to further assess condition of the body, nothing too crazy that can't be treated. The previous owner did a decent job repairing the rusted cheeks however, everything else back here will be taken down to good metal and treated properly.

Had a nice delivery today...Sway Bars came back from the finishing shop and turned out great. Can't wait to get them back on the 242! Jared at iPd hooked me up with some replacement stickers to slap on the bars to represent!

You're doing great work here. Love the car.

However, this thread could have ended after that photo of the speaker held into the door with zip ties, and it would still be the best thing on TB.

About the chrome, hope you didn't pay too much for it? Don't mean to sound negative but if it's all like the clamp up front I wouldn't accept it from my chromer. The pitting is hardly cut and looks only barely polished - it's one thing if you accept the look, but still, if the pitting isn't taken out the chance is big that there's still rust inside and will appear eventually.
I'm a big fan of chrome undies (into lowriders), but chrome like this underneath a car isn't gonna hold up very long. Chroming itself doesn't need to be expensive, but the hours prepping are. Thats why I wouldn't accept bad prepped but still expensive chroming.
