Default position of o2 sensor in cat or in header pipe

Hello
just took the 1990 240 through emissions and it failed. likely the converter and or the o2 sensor. I've checked everything else and the converter is old and rattling.
While looking at the ipd bosal units I noticed that there wasn't a spot for the o2 sensor shown in the pic. Further checking shows that the header pipe has a spot for it about a foot in front of the converter. I suspect the previous owner/mechanic... installed the o2 sensor in the test exhaust port of the converter. It is at the very front of the cat but I wonder if its overheating in this position or is it ok? anyone else have their sensor installed this way?
Also why is the IPD cat $200 when FCP is showing the same bosal for $128, anyone bought the groton and experience? it fit?

thanks
Gord

Mine is where you describe yours being. It is between the cat and the flange, facing the drive shaft. The test port on mine is further forward and faces the passenger side of the car.

Good to hear.... thanks.
While emailing back and forth with IPD he said, quote
"I have yet to see a 240 with an oxygen sensor in the catalytic converter. Usually the hole in the cat is for emissions testing an exhaust sample. The Bosal units have a plug in a threaded hole but I can't say for sure that an oxygen sensor will fit it without physically looking at one and removing the plug."

I kind of wondered about the o2 sensor being further up as the inlet port is angled downwards just a bit and if it was installed then it would likely be the lowest point on the car.

Cheers.

That guy is incorrect. Every LH2.4 and LH3.1 injected 240 has the o2 sensor in the catalytic converter. At least that's how the US models are.

Exactly right. My own 1989 245 has the O2 sensor in the cat. I know because I just replaced it.

My 89 244 had it's o2 in the header pipe just before the cat flange.
