Willie's '67 122 Project

Thanks man! Which car are you working on!?! Id love to wach your progress as well!

Im really glad i joined this site. Everyone has been really cool and helpful. Seems like a great community.

Def a good place to find information and experience.
I'm currently trying to get my 65' 122s roadworthy enough to be my daily during the warmer months. I need to put a project thread together.

The front section has to be shorter. Then you can get into differences in the flange sizes, Volvo had (at least) 3 different sizes,a nd seemed to switch between them almost at random. And the flanges off one trans won't necessarily swap to another trans.

It can be somewhat of a minor headache.

When I put an M41 in my PV I got lucky and my new late model M41 came with the same size flange as my PV's M40, so I just measured carefully, and took the driveshaft to a drivetrain shop and had them chop some 11-ish inches out of the front section, reweld and rebalance it.

It's somewhat painful to drive one of these old cars at modern highway speeds without an OD 5th gear. They'll do it in 4th, but that motor is *spinning*.

Ill ask my my local Volvo guy(Swahn Motors of Huntington Beach) if there is anything he can do about that.

I didn't see that he had D cams ... I had been looking for a K cam and came up short, with the exception of a UK supplier.... Which was like 200+ USD, and for that I'd just have one made up by schneider. Then I found one on here

So, since im doing a pretty much stock rebuild, i should use a C cam?

Nice! Yea do it, I wanna check it out. What would you say qualifies a car to be a road worthy daily driver? Im hoping to make mine a daily.
I was told: the bottom end of the engine, tranny, good radiator, suspension and tires. If those are solid, the car is reliable.

C is ok, D is peppier up top. If you keep the auto, the D wont be much of any improvement over a C. My 122 wagon is my daily, and will even be my snow daily. They're fun and people like to see you rocking it year round!

Goes forward, steers and stops! Haha. Big things are brakes (including e-brake), tune up (all fluids, filters, spark plugs/wires, points/condenser, suspension bushings, shocks, fuel/brake lines and maybe your rag joint and carrier bearing. The nice thing about these cars is that they're simple so there's not a lot you have to do to keep them on the road. More about personal preference. For instance I'd like to upgrade my exhaust, convert to electronic ignition and put a decent radio in. Not necessary, but for the drive to/from work I'd like those things.

If you get an M41 you'll really like it, the OD makes a nice combo to the 4.11 rearend. The driveshaft from your auto is the correct length for an OD.

These cars are great in the snow especially with original 165 15' "Pizza cutters" but two or three seasons of salt and they disappear right out from under you. The salt from your feet gets under that stuff they glue to the floors!
No worries in Cali though.

No salt in Oregon either... but I laid down POR 15, then truck bed liner.

I'm getting more and more interested in the idea of a manual swap. If I can find a bell housing, I'd really consider it.

I have a perfect condition bell housing with clutch fork ready to ship if you want it or decide you need it. From a 66 122, hydraulic cylinders. My cylinders are too worn out to use so I recommend buying new or rebuilt ones anyway.

And welcome to the 122 gang!

Thanks, man! I appreciate that! Right now it deends on how the engine rebuild goes, whether i i convert or not. If not now, maybe next year. I def want to do it tho, judging from what everyone is saying, it seems to really open up the engine.

So lets say i hold off on the manual swap(it comes down to cash, after the engine is done), would it be benificial to throw in a D now while its open, so later when i do convert, which i do want to, i dont have to worry about it?

Engine is out

Alright, the engine and tranny are finally out of the car. Anyone got any suggestions on what i should clean/replace ect while its out? I def wanna spray the bay down with some degreaser.
