240 signal light problem

My 1993 volvo 240 sedan has an issue with the left front and left rear turn signal lights. Both lights stay on bright whether or not I activate the switch. They are also on when the key is on OR off. The green arrow stays on dim. The right side front and rear work properly.

I have the battery ground cable disconnected at the moment so not to drain battery.

Any thoughts ? many thanks, Mike

There's a 93 240 greenbook at volvowiringdiagrams.com. Page 54 shows the turn signals. The
Hazard/4-way blinker switch is common to all turn lights, and is fed directly from the battery. Try flipping that switch off and on a few times and see if the problem goes away.

thanks Bob. Good suggestion but wasn't it. I tracked it down to the factory trailer hitch wiring. Judging by the spliced wiring looks to be dealer installed maybe ? Anyway I unplugged one of the wires and problem solved. Must be grounding somewhere so I'll run a new wire.

thanks again, Mike

Oh, I hadn't thought about trailer wiring. For trailer turn/tail/brake lights, the connector supplies the voltage to turn the trailer lamps on. Grounding the lamp wires on the trailer connector will do bad things (blow fuses) if any are turned on.

The '93 240 greenbook shows factory trailer wiring on pg.124. One of the options shows +12v on pin 5, but it's supplied through a relay that's only energized when ignition is on. In other words, your symptom of lights on with ignition off shouldn't be possible with factory wiring. Sounds like you may have some Kustom wiring to sort out.

yes it's custom wiring all right. The wiring at the hitch takes a beating and is pretty crusty around there. I may just remove it all since I don't trailer anything.

How do I find the greenbook wiring diagrams you mention. When I google it I get "online casinos" ! Very strange.

thx, mike

There is probably a converter box that has failed. A 240 uses separate bulbs and circuits for it's brake and turn signals. But a trailer uses the same filament of the bulb for brake or turn signals depending on the situation and to get that to work on a car like a volvo there are cheapo converters.

thank you for turning me on to the Green Book ! I've been muddling through with a Haynes manual for 2 years.

best wishes,
mike
