So it's about time to put a project thread together for my 1984 242 Ti (it also helps that I've taken a ton of pics and spent mucho grande time/dineros on it). My overall plan is to make this a solid street car which I can use for autocross. Keeping k-jet as long as possible is a want...I know it is flawed but for that reason I have grown attached. Overall I would like to keep this a budget rebuild, skimping on let's say top of the line from time to time just to get up and running. Down the road I will definitely have the all out approach just not right now. Also, adding in any Group A style mods along the way will be a bonus.

Some background: Was purchased back in Oct/Nov from another member here...why I bought it then I have no idea but I just figured it's a brick, someone must have just put the duct tape in the wrong spot so it should be an easy fix, right? Started with the basic tune up stuff and had to replace the accumulator, alternator(fried a few grounds in the process), timing, ignition components, wp, etc. and immediately found out there was some **** gone wrong with this car...

Where I had some of these issues...B21FT K-Jet issues, Misfire at idle

Long story short the valve springs appear to have gone sorta flat/intake valves are all effffed up. This caused severe misfires and there was lots of this at first...

Not pretty but at least it runs. This brings us up to Mid January.

Did some further work and replaced the front springs and control arms. Strut mounts were totally shot and the pass side spring had sheared.

Got a little excited after tax returns and jumped on one of these.

Between fixing the motor issues and now about a month had passed. The car accumulated about 10 miles on it from driving once. With the autox season approaching it was time to get serious and rent out a space where I could properly tackle the job of fixing the rest of this car. As of a week ago.

Did some poking around cause stripping the interior was too easy and quickly found my next project. LOL @ eccentric bushings

That's all I got for now, more prob next week. Need to de-rust the axle and paint this week. All of the replacement rear suspension bushings will be Super Pro poly, stock torque rods w/poly and an IPD panhard bar. Hopefully it will all go back in next Sunday after I fix some of the gas tank/fuel pump BS.

Glad you decided to work on it and bring her back. I think it's got a ****load of potential and am secretly (not so much anymore, lol) envious of your coupe vs my wagon. And I'm WICKED jealous of that space you have to work in!!!!

To others, he's doing a crapload of work to this car and should be patted on the back for not junking it (or slapped silly by his wallet)! There's something to be said for persistence.

Thanks guys.

Did some work over the past 2 nights, removed stock downpipe (total pita including one bent and one stripped flange bolt), started disassembling some of the front suspension to replace some parts with poly as well as cleaning up the rear axle some more. Will finish cleaning the axle and repaint this weekend.

I'm a noob and didn't know it was a 1031 until I saw it on the housing...then found my way to the Dave Barton page about rear diffs (double fin = 1031).

2" hole saw made short work of this rear trailing arm bushing. A little bit of torching/wire wheel and its all ready for Super Pro!

More progress this weekend.

Started on the torque rods, still have to clean them up and give a fresh coat of paint before the new bushings go in.

Finished cleaning up the rear axle about as much as I cared to and gave it a couple coats of paint. At least this way its all black and not several shades of black/yellow/rust. Super Pro bushings also installed.

Test fitting some engine bling...

Going to go through the rest of the fuel system pre-fuel filter so I started with the accumulator and fuel pump. The main pump is on its way out and started crapping on me the day I brought it to the new space. This main bracket is pretty haggard too and needs a little tlc.

Thinking I should do something about this guy too?

Car is sad...

That looks like a clean shell. With your attention to detail it will shape up beautifully.

Thanks guy! My shots might make the body look good but there are a few spots that are pretty bad. Before the car rolls out of here I'll fix those areas. The bodywork will come after I finish the suspension (f+r), redo the brake lines, and button up the fuel system.

Here is the first area of concern...
2012-01-27_08-46-41_95.jpg

Rust List:
-Pass Rear 1/4 panel
-Pass Rear pan (whole thing)
-Pass Front pan (about 1/3)
-Drivers side frame where the pans meet
-Drivers rear rocker (might skip since it's small)

I already have the replacement panels for all of this so it will be a good amount of cutting and grinding to get it all patched up. Also got some POR 15 paint and metal ready etching spray. Still need some 3M seam sealer to finish it off.

To paraprhase the words of the Dark Knight (monty python fans will know): "Oi've seen worse!" Just be sure to save those mud flaps!! I figured out a new mounting solution if those brackets are shot, btw, thanks to Home Depot's deck hardware section!! Get plenty of practice there...you're going to be asked to help me with my bad areas next :p

Nice job cleaning out those trailing arm bearing races...they look brand new!!

And those fuel lines add 20 hp, no? ;)

Right...the built-in constriction of the stainless steel tubing contributing to increase fuel pressure, similar to the vaso-constriction of the arteries in our bodies. Interesting :p

It is a weak addition but finally got these bushings out of the trailing arms!

Instead of doing it the smart way with a proper press I had to suffer for 2 days not having the right tools. Used a hole saw to cut out the bushing, cleared enough material to get a hacksaw in there to cut the sleeve, then pried the ends up a tad and banged the christ out of it with a BFH.

Nice car, i've always wanted a running 240t, i would love to see this some day, i'm in southern NH will you be at the swedish car day's at the lars anderson?
