The saga of the "Swag Wagon"

Do you carry rear seat passengers often and care about what they hear? Lots of guys who are serious about sound quality in a vehicle don't run rear tweeters at all. The consensus is they provide little benefit for the front stage, and only make tuning more difficult.

FWIW, I'm planning on using only mid-bass drivers in each rear door, attenuated and time aligned to (hopefully) enhance the front stage. The stock lower door location should be fine for lower frequencies, which aren't as "directional" as the sound tweeters put out.

Makes sense, I will talk to my audio guy and see what he thinks. Post some current pictures of your car, quit holding out on us.;-)

Were you able to use the stock front speaker grilles?

What are you going to put in the rear doors? I've been wondering how easily 6.5s could be adapted back there. Obviously would involve some cutting.

Canned the components, like you said, my audio guy said it was a waste, just put good 6.5 full range instead.

I mounted them in the new door panels, and notched out the center of the inner door. They WILL fit without trimming, but really tight. I used the euro spec RF 6.5's as they are a bit shallower.

Here is a crude pic of what I cut.

This will allow the speaker to be in the center of the door and the upper edge just about a 1/2" over the chrome trim line that separates the lower panel. I will take a picture tomorrow.

that plastic condom on doors doesnt do ****.... and actually keeps some of the moisure in between it and the door panel. Do what I did and paint the inner doors panels with epoxy paint.

Yea, I kinda figured that and I have covered the complete back of each door card with gaffers tape to keep the moisture out. But, what the hell, I spent too much time cleaning the condoms to just throw them out. :)

Great job. Looking forward to hearing about how much wind noise is reduced especially after roof sound deadening.

I have a 245 soon to be getting royal treatment. Thanks for the inspiration .

Conner, Here is the 6.5" installed in the rear door.

Awesome. Do you think there is any chance a speaker 1" deeper than those RF's would ever fit in that location without spacing them?

I may have missed it, but where did you mount your amp(s)?

It is worth every penny and hour spent IMHO. The link below from Jack is what inspired me to order a new headliner and start the process on the roof. With that done, I estimate about 150 sq foot of .080 sound mat ( about $275.00 from Amazon) will be in the wagon. I will add a layer of foil bubble pack to the roof the same as the floor pan.

The car is almost strange to drive now as quite as it is, not used to it yet. Wife's S40 has more road noise than the wagon. ;-) I will update when the roof is done.

Depth won't matter at all in the center section as the window doesn't intrude into that at all.

My amp is in the RR buttcheek , sad to say just laying down in the bottom. Was mounted on a piece of wood from the last owner and I removed that when adding the sound mat. I haven't taken time to make a mount.

Today was cargo day. Pulled the rear seat and all the rear trim and re colored the carpets and trim. Can't see replacing the carpet as it's perfect other than being dark blue from the sun. Bought some SEM "Color Cote" that is made for hard trim or cloth/carpet. Followed the instruction as listed and it looks great.

You can see the diff vs the carpet on the rear seat back.

All new trim covers, hardware and rear sill plate.

Seats, new Volvo headliner and dash are next in line. Need more weekend;-)

Yea, It needs to lose them. I really don't want to put them back with the new headliner, I may scrap them and just plug the holes in the wheel tubs as I would never let anyone ride in the "suicide seat" anyways, unless I really don't like them.

Where'd you order a new headliner from?

This is a great thread, lucky kid to have a dad so into modding and sprucing up his car for him!

Btw, I solved the Flathood grill dilemma by using Velcro wire mantainance straps that I got from my IT guy, the straps used to clean up wires under the computer desk! They have worked great for years now!

How? You have a picture?

Long time away from here, my son was away at school and has graduated and is back home...and so is the Swag wagon.

soon after coming home, the Swag Wagon was rudely bludgeoned in the right front by a woman in a ford in a Wawa parking lot. After fighting with the insurance, settled for $1490.00 in damages.

Found a 130 silver 88 240 in the pull and pay with nice fenders and a hood for $80.00. Pulled the front end back in place, replaced the right side e-code healight and marker. We and had enough insurance money left to buy some paint and materials. Stripped the fender , door and 1/4 tops, the roof, tailgate and the used hood. Spray bomb primer on the bare spots where I cut thru the factory primer and sanded it with some 600 wet. Painted it in sections from the pinstripes up in the driveway except the roof cowl that we did in a booth. 3 coats of base color and two coats of clear on each section. Quick scuff and polish and it looks pretty good.

New seats and carpet(used from a perfect black DL from a member here) and headliner/ new dash is next!\
