240 4-1-3 Code in non-California LH 3.1 car??

Hi all,

I have a 1990 240 Manual LH 3.1 car that recently had the CEL come on.

I went to check the codes and in position #6, I got a 4-1-3 code.

Looking in the Bentley and brickboard, I've found that it's for the EGR. However, I don't believe my car should have an EGR though right? It's been an AZ car it's whole life (now a TX car).

Is there something I'm missing here? I also read that the car is okay to drive with that code, is that also true?

Thanks all.

It doesn't matter where it was originally sold, it matters what emissions system was put on it at the factory. Dealers bring cars in from other states to fill a customer's wants/needs. Take a look at the driver's side apron right next to the strut tower and see if it says California Emissions or Federal Emissions. As far as running fine, that depends on what is making it generate that code. You won't hurt it. It just may have some driveability issues that are annoying.

It should be easy to fix. Just fix it.

Inspect for torn rubber elbows on the whole system.

Just fix it if it's there and drive happy. EGR is not only good for environment but its also good for the motor.

So I went to the junkyard to pick up what I thought was the EGR, but in reality I pulled the IAC. But according to the diagrams in the Bentley, the EGR would be in the same position and using the same port as the IAC.

So, I have confirmed that my brick does not have an EGR.

How does the car throw off an EGR code then if it has no EGR??

That's exactly how it throws the code. It makes sense now. Pull the felt knee panel off and tell us which EZK ignition box you have in there? My guess is, someone replaced the EZK in your car with one from an EGR equipped car and it is sending a code because all the EGR related components it is supposed to operate are missing.

According to the Motor Emission App Book (used for smog inspections) it should have EGR regardless of CA/Fed. Don't you have the underhood emission sticker and vac diagram decal to verify?

Did some research around the forums and found this list:

940 / 940 Mk II (944, 945) - 2.3 08.92-07.95 116HP B230FD

LH2.4 (Fuel ECU):

0 280 000 943
(LH2.4.4 - Volvo p/n: 6842056, 8601039, 9146794)

0 280 000 946
0 986 262 712 - recon. part
(LH2.4.4 - Volvo p/n: 1275762, 8251084, 3507179, 8601150, 9146221, 9146847)

EZ 116 K (Ignition ECU):

0 227 400 196 - Automatic gearbox
0 227 400 231 - Manual gearbox

So with that in mind, it may seem as though my EZK box actually is not stock for the car?

That appears to be for a '93- B230F with EGR Volvo part #3507348.

You need a 0227400169 (Volvo part #3531325). The parts guy may have been dyslexic (196 vs. 169)

That's your problem. A 140, 196 and 209 EZK are all NA EGR EZKs. Your 196 is looking for the missing EGR components. You can run a 146 or a 169 EZK and the 4-1-3 code will be gone. I have a 169 EZK I will sell. PM me if interested.

Nice. Where did you both find this reference information? Is there a list of all the ICU's that came in 240s?

Headed to the junkyard tomorrow to pick one up from another 90 240 in the yard. Already checked it had no EGR, so should be perfect.

If that doesn't check out, I'll PM you.

Thanks guys!
