I'm at wits end. My 73 142 will start & run file for 5 or so minutes, then will die. It will restart after 15 or so minutes, but will not run right, like it's only running on 2 cylinders.
It is completely stock, D-jet, new fuel filter, all new fuel & vacuum hoses. Points & cap are 6 months old.
Anybody in Lake Steven, Everett, Snohomish areas that is willing to come by one day & help troubleshoot this damn thing. Pizza, beer, provided!
Let me know. I'm getting tired of $100 tow bills every time I take her out!
Thanks,
Steve
Done a fair amount of D-jet...but on
the other Swedish car, the one that is svelt and fast...
No.1 thing on D-jet is germ-free, minty fresh virginal grounds...
Saab in the infinite wisdom
ganged like 10 grounds just below the battery tray---right where residue and crap would run down hill and corrode the fawk outta the wire end eyelets...Brilliant...
Many a happy person after either wire brushing off all the conntectors AND THE TAB of metal they bolted too....
No2.....in the Saab anyway there was a big fat 3/8 or 1/2" rubber hose to feed the external pump--which was inside the truck in what would be the "butt-cheek" area of a Volvo..That hose would always get all aged and full of little cracks---which you'd never see under the layer of undercoating and mud..Wouldn't get damp, but they'd suck air..
Being an old carb guy I felt it was like a low float level...but was in fact low fuel pressure..
I was flat out given a number of 99s w/D-jet when people would get so frustrated and broke from genius "technicians" (aka parts changers) shot-gunning everything under the hood 3-4-6 times...18" of new feed hose later I had fun cars to sell...
Check the main feed hose, clean it germ free then bend it to see if there are these cracks
kinda like this:
nuther great piccie:
Final thing is an area neglected severely by normal parts changer monkeys ---technicians sorry!
Under the normal points plate is a pair of trigger points 180 from eachother, they're what fires the injectors 9like everything Euro 2 times per 720* cycle---each time piston comes to TDC) They have a rubbing block just like the ignition points.
And just like the ignition points NOBODY ever lubes them...So 2 things happen---the rubbing block wears and eventually points don't open....
And
malheuresment the cam wears...
You oughtter whip 'em out and see if there's any rubbing block left...
2 screws:
Until searchin those piccies I figure you're SOL when the things were neglected/worn
However looking here
http://www.mbca.org/forum/d-jet-trigger-points
they refer to a place in the ol' Bundesrepublik who do an exchange deal
https://www.mercedes-benz.com/de/me...ce-teile/mercedes-benz-classic-service-teile/
Only problem is you have to do some homework to find the exact Mercedes 4 cylincer D-jet car, check their PN and compare Volvo PN....I am 99,8% sure all 4 cyl D-jet trigger points is the same, but I's getting old and its more than 35 years since i touched any of this stuffs...
But check these things carefully, fix whatever you find, and report back.
D-jet ain't bad, but everything---like everthing Germanski---must be
perfektes!
