745T endurance racer: WHEELS

I?m building a 745T for endurance racing and I?m trying figure out the best wheel and tire combination. The race organizers will allow brake calipers to be swapped for a minimal fine. With that in mind I?m thinking of running 16 inch wheels. 17 rims are another option but it would have too much of a negative impact on the car?s gearing.

-Can anyone recommend a 16 inch wheel with a 5x108 bolt pattern?

-How wide can one go with the tires (225 or 245)?

225 50 16 with a 16x8 is a good combo for a enduro.

Not many 245 choices in 16" if you want more options go to 17"

I can sell you a rough set of 16x7.5 TSW wheels if you want cheap 16"s that are wider than what's commonly available.

We used them on our lemons car with 225/50/16.

We then switched to 16x8.5 & 16x9.5 Corvette C4 wheels w/wheel adapters. A bit heavier, looks cool, and stretching a street tire a little bit helps grip / stability / response. Not a huge difference, but a 225 on even a 7.5" is pinched slightly. 9" would be my preference for racing, but even 16x8 will be uncommon to find for RWD offset & 5x108.

Last time I checked, ESM did a decent 16x8 that bolts into a RWD Volvo.

Motegi MR131s (17x8) are cheap (though the adapters you will need make them less so), light, so far we haven't been able to break them, and 245/40R17 is the sweet spot in terms of rubber for your dollar. Only bad side so far is that our tire guy hasn't been able to make weights stick to them...

Previously we ran 16" V?xx MGAs, which are also cheap and durable (get them off eBay) , and you can get Direzzas in 225/45R16 so the tire problem is solved. If I hadn't already offered our old stock to another racer here I'd have made you a deal.

(Won't be Lemons or Lucky Dog; brakes/wheels/tires are 'free' and they don't do fines. Ditto AER though I don't expect a fresh 745T would be competitive enough to be accepted. Chump will dock you points, so maybe those guys?)

It's a poor and dated design, they're all heavy because of the way the rim is supported by the spokes. IPD reps BNIB or not will not carry that price premium when glamorous deep lip Eikers are available new for a lower cost.

FTFY

ChumpCar (I hate the name change to ChampCar).

I plan to install lung studs and buy light weight spacers.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

17 inch wheel considerations (I’ve run both of these brands)
Konig Hypergram 17x8 (16.3#), $154 each
Advanti Storm SI 17x8 (17.8#), $214 each
