Well, I have a crack that started out small and with the heat it seems to be slowly growing. It was a tiny little crack where something hit around the wiper area at the bottom of the windshield, now it is about a quarter way up and moving over toward the passenger side.

I am picky and would like to keep replace it with a GENUINE Volvo windshield so I tried to get a replacement from pick n pull, I found two that didn't have any cracks and seemed ok, I removed the stripping and gently tried to loosen it up around the edges where the stick black goop is holding it in with a flat blade screw driver, going further up, gently working it and each one CRAAAACK! I had one loose and one side was about to come out completely, got to the other side and it just put a big crack through the side of the windshield when trying to do the same thing.

What does a Genuine Volvo Windshield cost, is this a $200-$300 or more item? I also got a quote to have it replaced at a glass place (they use PPG Glass) for $165 total installed. Sounds like a good deal . . . . . ?

That is a really good deal for the replacement at the glass place. For all essential purposes a windshield is a windshield. I just called my local Volvo dealership, they said $383.53 for a replacement windshield, that is before any discounts, and applicable taxes....and that is just for the glass without installation. I would have it done at a glass shop either way, as they do windshields everyday, and a Volvo tech would be lucky to do 1-2/year. If it is not installed properly, even if a minute mistake is made, you will either end up with the windshield leaking in inclement weather, or have your trim fly off on the freeway.

ok, that's what I was thinking . . . . . My '87 could use a Windshield too (been shot by a Pellet Gun or something at least twice) and for less than the cost of a GENUINE Windshield from a Volvo Dealer I guess I could have both Volvos done, which does sound good. Definately doesn't seem to be worth it to go Genuine here. PPG should hopefully be comparable, I'm almost certain that's who GM uses for their auto glass . . . . .

I had a windshield replaced in my '84 245, it was a PPG and the tint band at the top was so much larger than the OEM windshield, I found myself looking though it to see the road. I complained and the insurance company refused to do anything for me, even though this was very unsafe. I wound up having to pay for a new factory unit at over 300$.

You could also get a gfood glass from a wrecker for under $100 & then have a shop install it but that will cost another $100. So $165 installed sounds good.

one thing, ask the shop that does the work if they clean the old sealer with a wire wheel, treat any rust & heat the tube of sealent. These are essential to a good job vs. a cheapy one.

Most of the Pick-N-Pull yards around here also have a glass operation out front, and they work for cheap, see if any of your local junkyards do the same.

I think the glass on my 240 was Pinkerton or something... and I got the windsheidl installed with a new surround on it for about 170.

***ot Warning***

Hey, how are you liking your dynomax? Would you recommend the ultraflo to others? How does the super turbo stack against it?

i got my windshield replaced by some local shop, they came to my house and did the whole thing in like 45 minutes. came with a nice tint strip at the top, used my original trim, and charged me like $150.

i know it was a good plan because just a few days ago, driving down I4, a big chunk of the semi-truck in front of me fell off and knocked my windshield HARD! i thought it cracked, but all it did was break my drivers side wiper, no cracks or scratches or anything. i think i got lucky, but it was still scary as hell! if i had my old cracked windshield, it probably would have shattered, and that would have sucked

Gotta shop around . . . . .

Windshield Replacement Update

Just got me a hell of a deal, well least I think so. I just made an appointment to have a premium Pilkington windshield installed, total cost is $215 total for mobile service.

Just proof how you have to shop around. The first place I checked with (claiming the lowest prices) wanted $389 to do a Pilkington, $359 do to a PPG. The next place who returned our inquiry and left a message on our voice mail stated that there is no difference between Pilkington and PPG, that they are from the same family, Pilkington was unavailable, blah blah and wanted like $289 for PPG. Other places I talked to wanted around $270 to do a Pilkington. So anyway got what I want for $215 total for mobil service.

UltraFlow is definately cool, I like it just as much as the Magnaflow on my '87, it has a nice deep tone and I think it's a great inexpensive performance muffler for any Turbo. However if you have a NA brick definately avoid it and Magnaflow because these are freeflowing mufflers, which means you will sacrafice back pressure, back pressure you need to maintain torque off the line and at lower speeds. I did a Dynomax UltraFlow on a NA car once, I liked the tone and the acceleration at high speeds but it felt like it was lacking power at lower speeds and off the line, felt like it took a couple seconds off 0-60 times.

I like Dynomax, the quality is good, still sounds great and works perfect a little over 2 years later. The "Super Turbo" muffler seems like it would provide nice flow while maintaining enough back pressure for NA applications (don't let the Super Turbo name fool you, it's obvious this muffler is better for an non turbo application) . . . . .

take care guys . . . . . late

Covered by insurance

I don't know who your insurance carrier is, so this may not be applicable. I have always had the minimum liability coverage from State Farm, but that actually includes replacement glass. I've now had two different windshields replaced in the last year, a 940 and a 240. Both just had small chips in the middle of the glass from road gravel.

They were replaced by a place in Louisville, KY called Glass Specialists. (I was referred there by State Farm, but was told I could actually pick any place I wanted.) They use an automated claim system, and I don't pay a dime. They will come out to wherever the car is and replace the glass, and my insurance premiums don't go up.

So if you have State Farm, or even if you don't, it's worth checking to see whether you have coverage that will replace your windshield for free.

Hell, we just bought another 240 and it has a crack in its windshield too. Gonna get that replaced soon too. Glass Specialist claims to use OEM glass... and it certainly appears to be good quality.

I think Pilkington is the OEM glass...on my 'rents '98 XC the windshield says Pilkington as well as Volvo on one of the corners. I had mine replaced with Pilkington last year...looks great.
