heater valve - old style

I have replaced my blower motor, but now I realize my heat is "always on".

It's an 84 so the old style heater control valve

I don't have A/C, so not critical since I open windows/sunroof, but it's still on my to-do.

Not looking for the least expensive option. Something that will be reliable and most importantly not leak

Options I've considered for replacing heater valve. Any thoughts on these?

1) VP Autoparts, $110
-They don't say who manufactures the part
- haven't seen anyone on here comment about it

2) Wagonmister $150
https://www.wagonmeister.com/240-replacement-heater-valve
- lots of positive comments on this board
- not really original, and requires some modification
- this one doesn't have the capillary tube

2) IPD, made by MTC, $145
- looks the most similar to what I have installed

What exactly is the function of the capillary? Is the capillary what causes the valve to fail open after time?

I've seen the one that europartshouse sells and the conversion kits to the newer style, but not really interested.

The tube places temperature sensing in the airflow for feedback to the valve. It also seems to be the vulnerable part of the system, even more than the valve and seat, and the main reason we can't rebuild the old ones.

You can try to adjust yours, as recommended in the Volvo green manual for AC, but after 30 years, I think they're all about dead.

I'm surprised to see IPD has that Ranco valve available again. I think if I needed one, I'd to to Dave Samuels for his.

IPD one is crap that will blow in six months and spew coolant all over your interior...
Wagonmeister works great but has the highest cost.
Europartshouse is the cheapest price and works just fine, only issue is you loose a little travel of the lever but it doesn't affect operation.

Can't go wrong with the last two... Don't even think of putting the IPD one in.

Watch the youtube video linked to on the EuroPartsHouse page. It made me feel better about giving it a try, instead of one of the other alternatives. Haven't received/installed it yet.

Wagonmeister is the way to go, unless you enjoy cleaning antifreeze outta your carpets, but maybe the NOS one is good also. Do not use the aftermarket stuff
