Default Recommended Rear Axle

I just purchased the 1983 760 w/ the 5.0 T5 swap, it has a 3.54 with one wheel wonder syndrome! Any how what rear axle would you recommend?? Also the proper way to ID this axle?

Thank you in advance,

Kevin

I think of the open differential as a fuse - to help it last longer. If you want a locker with the V8 think about an upgrade to an Explorer or Ford 9" diff. Or just don't hammer it.

The ratio is how fast you want the car. 3.73s will make car faster, but at an the expense of higher rpms on the freeway. I think the diff in my car is too short - too many RPMs on the freeway. With all the torque I end up using 2nd & 4th around town if I don't have to come to a dead stop at the stop signs.

Thanks ADent, what set up are you running in the 785? I'm thinking I may have to go to a Ford, the motor on the dyno was putting down 290hp 320tq to the rear axle, I had a stock 5.0/AOD set up in my 1984 242, it did fine with the stock axle. This one I have now is a little crazier!

Find a 93-94 960 wagon rear axle. It will have the 1041K rear axle with a G80 locker and 3.31 rear axle ratio. It is a bolt in deal for your car. 1992 960s ran a 3.91 ratio.

You can run the OEM rear and it will last as long as you don't beat on it, run slicks at a drag strip or drop the clutch all the time. Throw in a good LSD and strengthen the subframe and you will be just fine. My 83 5.0 car has the stock rear and it's lived behind that engine for a long time. I'm putting out a lot of torque, some high flowing heads, intake and other mods and it's working fine.
