Atom's Amazon Wagon Project Update Thread

Phone mount (also the head unit in HQ). Goes in the upper dash location

The hinge probably looks a little funny, but like a suicide door hinge, in order to keep the gap tight I need the insert to hinge “out” rather than just pivot along the edge. All of the middle stack openings will have similar polished aluminum trim rings

I used a generic push-lock-spring cabinet latch for positioning and motion.

So awesome.

However, what happens when you get a different phone?

Edit: You should also design a wireless charger for there. Even if your phone doesn't support it yet

As long as the phone fits I can always just make a new plate/insert/holder as required. Not installed yet is the plug that the phone will ?dock? to when slid in. For charging and audio.

Updates:
Wrapped some of the dash components. Also found out I was sent the wrong color early on and used that color to wrap my door panels. Not a huge deal since I intended on re-doing to upper panels two tone anyway. Gauge panel trim is just sitting in there. Have some trimming to do in order to get things fitting better.

I was contacted by Dgerry (on R3V) from G-Pop Shop in Arkansas who was interested in helping out with the build from a turbo standpoint. Since I had already bought the turbo I was going to use and don’t have to moneys to buy anything nice and new, he offered to do a little trade work with me. I sent him my new turbo to upgrade. He installed new journal bearings, new upgraded 360 thrust bearing, new seals (including a stepped gap version on the turbine side). He balanced it, leak checked it and changed to a billet GTX3076 compressor wheel. It’s on it’s way back to me and I couldn’t be more excited.

I still need to iron out some dash details before I can wrap it. It’s tough when I get antsy to not just wrap it and put it in. Carpet kit will be coming soon and I have a pair of custom floor mats getting sewn up as I type.

Interesting; I didn't know China was making journal bearing GT3076R knock-offs.
Is the "GTX" compressor wheel a genuine one, or also a China copy?

That C255 compressor design flows quite a bit more than the old BCI-18 that your turbo came with; should be a healthy upgrade.

The "GT3071" I have here uses GT30 housings, turbine wheel, and what appears to be a BW K27/S200 compressor wheel.

G-Pop shop rocks, great to see lend you a hand. I've sent them 5-6 turbos over the years and never had an issue.

It was a Chinese GT2871 that I sent him. He modified it to accept the “NOS GTX3076” (quoting him) wheel he had on the shelf. The wheel that was on it was 49mm x 71mm, and the one he put in is 56mm x 75mm.

I’m excited to get this thing in and running.

So it's a 2876 now then? That's a healthy mismatch between turbine and compressor. The GT28 turbine wheel is only 54mm on the inducer (major) diameter.

Just as an FYI, not everything magically works out for me. I am not going to have funds, or time, to get my front seats upholstered before I’ve got stuff to do this coming spring so I decided to paint/dye the front seats. I had some custom color mixed up and prepped/sprayed the seats. I know it’s not a solid long term solution, but I figured I could get one season out of it. Well, after getting it all done it felt “dry”. Not like how it usually is. I stuffed my arm up in the seat to remove the hangers I used while spraying and everywhere the seat wrinkled the paint cracked. I drug a nail across it and it flakes right off. FML. Now I need to strip off all the paint, re-prep and spray again. I won’t be using custom mixed paint this time (I’m blaming that material), but instead an off-the-shelf rattle can color. This is gonna be a pain in the a$$.

The leather and the paint didn't get along ? That sucks..... I have had good success with canned upholstery paint but I have never tried a seat.

None of it got along. I just started the removal process in the centers. I tested a patch with some rattle can SEM in great that I had and it was soft, supple and stuck like chuck. Just got some hours of stripping ahead of me.

Set up the workshop after doing a fair amount of shoveling. Came up with a pretty good rattle can combo that got the seat color pretty close. Test fit the Nardi. Slightly smaller, so it blocks even more of the gauges for me. That’s why I added LEDs on the lower inner gauge bolt locations. They’re turn signal repeaters. From my driving position the turn indicators are 100% blocked. Now I need to make a top half cluster bezel.

The kids and I also took some storage bins I had and we built some snowball fighting forts.

The 11 year old is tall for his age, and the three year old is short for his age, so we tried to stage the wall height so it could work for both

Same 3 yr old I spoke to when Danny, you and I got wings in Seattle ?

I love your gauge cluster, can't say it enough.

Hoping to possibly wrap the dash tomorrow AM! Pretty excited. I think I’ve got enough of the detail stuff completed to move forward. Pretty excited to check that off. I’ll still need to make the polished aluminum “chrome” strip.
