So I bought that wagon from Jalopnik's "Nice Price or Crack Pipe"

Hey guys,

So like the title says, I just picked up a new to me 1980 245 DL that was featured on Nice Price or Crack Pipe a few years back. https://jalopnik.com/for-8-000-this-1980-volvo-245-dl-is-the-box-it-came-i-1681100475 It's kind of a funny story actually, I saw the wagon on Craigslist, fell in love and started doing my homework on ze Google when a pic turned up that made me say, "wow that looks exactly like the car I'm talking to this seller about"... Kinda hard to mistake the GT instrument panel lol. Long story short, it was the same damn car.

So yes, it's clean, but FAR from what anybody could or should have expected for an $8K 240. Miles I'm quite sure are unknown, nice paint from the pictures is actually a super ****ty respray, but overall, I'm not upset with what I got it for.

In any case, this is now my DD, but I'd like to see it become in my hands what it was portrayed to be, just don't know where to start.

Issue number 1: It needs some coaxing to fire up. If cold or let sitting for more than 30 mins, I'm having to play with the pedal and keep the rpms up until it can idle on its own. Any suggestions?

That's my intention, but the obvious stock changes aren't a priority at the moment, making it run as it did from the factory is. Perhaps I'll start with a tune up. Cap, rotor, plugs, wires.

That is a typical symptom of a clogged or too high control pressure in the control pressure regulator. Makes the cold starting a series of stalls or keeping it revved up until it is warmed up enough to run. Even then the engine is too lean.

You will need the kjet fuel pressure testing gauge setup. You can build one or rent the setup from our member here Hiperfauto.

Interesting. The PO explained to me that the mechanic used a fuel pump from a 97 Pontiac Bonneville...this may be part of the problem. I'll look into that.

Issue #2: On my home yesterday from Kansas City, I found that once when I overfilled the tank, I smelled gas in the cabin. Thought it was simply because I overfilled. Now that I filled up today, I still smell gas. PO also said that the gas tank was newer...new or not, it shouldn't be venting to the cabin.

yeah, pop the kick panel on the back passenger side and you will likely find the vent hose missing, the hose is cracked, or the clamp is loose.

A pump for a bonneville is not going to work properly unless it's got high enough pressure and volume. The Bosch pumps are made to operate at the higher pressure with enough fuel volume.

I had some gasoline odors I couldn't chase down - finally ran new lines to the charcoal canister and it took care of it. As far as the Pontiac pump - yikes. I'm guessing that required modifying the fuel lines to even get it in there?

Dude you got taken.

Dude that article is from 2015 and it's for reference. Same car, bought it from the owner that actually got taken. Brah.

Anyway, I'll dig into the back tonight after work. Probably get to the vacuum door issue this weekend and the stock fuel pump has been ordered. I'll see what's going on after I install it.

What I could use is a recommendation on an indie shop in the Chicago area.

Wow, I remember that wagon. It looked really nice until I went through the pictures carefully. IIRC, the rubber seal between the cowl and hood is half painted red, there's a receipt in the stack for something about rust repair yet the ad says no rust, and the mileage seems off even though they claim a factory installed GT cluster [ed: I think I misread the ad]. I emailed the dealership with a few questions (wire rot, major repairs in stack of receipts, rust) but they never responded. Let me look around a bit.... (hum along while we wait....)

OK, here we go. Here's the original ad copy:

This One owner beauty was purchased by a Major in United States Army while He was in Europe on deployment. We have attached pictures of the paper work that proves it. This car spent some time on the base in Europe before it was shipped to an United States Army base in Virginia where it spent the rest of its life. It has 5 Speed Overdrive Manual Gearbox, Power Brakes, Leather seats, Tape / AM / FM, Tow Hitch and Air Conditioning. This Volvo has been updated with Dashboard, Steering Wheel as well as Seats from GT model by its previous Owner or by Volvo dealership in Europe at the time of purchase.

Engine is in Good Shape, does not smoke, does not leak, nice and quiet.
Gearbox feels Perfect, shifts without any problems, without delay, and without noise.
Clutch feels like New.
Suspension is in Excellent shape, Car tracks nice and straight.
There is No Evidence of any Electrical problems.

The exterior is in Excellent shape for a 1980. ( !!! Check out the pictures !!! ). There is absolutely no rust anywhere on the car.
Leather Seats, Carpet Floor and Glass are all in Great shape ( !!! Check out the pictures !!! )
Interior of this car is Nice and Clean ( !!! Check out the pictures !!! ).
This Volvo has 4 matching New Tires that are mounted on Good straight rims.

This car had recent brake job performed on it, our mechanics have performed full Maintenance on this car, they have also replaced the Exhaust. Our Upholstery shop replaced the seats in this Volvo.

PM me with your address and I'll drop a CD in the mail with the original dealership pictures (~200MB so too big to email).

If you don't have it already, get a copy of the Bentley Volvo 240 Repair Manual. It covers the turbo k-jet setup but not quite the NA k-jet setup in your car. I've seen used paperback versions go for ~$15 on amazon (or buy the new hardback for ~$60). You can also find the original Volvo Greenbooks for various major systems for your car. See the stickys at the top of this sub-forum.

Edit: For the vacuum doors, I noticed in looking back over the pictures that it was missing a vacuum hose from the one-way valve (small salt-shaker sized thingy) hanging off the intake manifold to the cabin.

^^^ could be. The stack of receipts shown in the original dealership pictures, or at least the older receipts, show a "68 3rd infantry rd" address in Fort Leavenworth KS.

Oh jeez, was it? Hah sweet. Well it definitely wasn't worth that. I'm getting a bit nervous now actually, it's hesitating at about 3500rpm. As to the fuel pump, I haven't gotten the chance to check it out. I have a 3 hour commute to work and honestly I've just been driving it. I'm taking a new position in my hometown in the next couple weeks so if it lasts that long...I may ask my new employer if I can start in 3 weeks to have that week to get this wagon in order. But I need to get it done, not putz around in the garage. Still looking for shops in Chicago!
