It's for the time delay for the dome light. It'll get hot as long as the driver's door is open and there's battery power.

It's not a relay, it's a thermo-electric delay switch. And it gets hot by nature, it actually has a heating coil inside it. It is for the dome lamp.

Thanks for the info guys. I did have multiple doors open, including the hatch. I know my dome light is burnt out, so I will definitely look into this. I'll check it for heat again tomorrow before having the door open too long. Now that I know its dome light related it shouldn't be a big deal.

time to start using solid state relays

I'm with you in 2014. This one they were putting in Volvos a bit earlier; my 83 242 has one. But related to your remark, I believe even now, in 2014 automotive applications, it is still cheaper to build a mechanical relay in car production quantities.

Good to know!

I ran across this component while doing a manual swap on my wagon (while switching out the pedal clusters). I figured it was part of the Pursuit alarm system installed on the car.

Good to know it's not constantly hot.

Yup, reached in there yesterday after not having the door open long. Not hot. Glad I asked, and it ended up being helpful info for others
