I just got my hands on a red 1980 242 dl.
It is a non sunroof, manual everything including steering and 4 speed with no overdrive.

I'm just curious about the trans and if OD was an option or if this trans isn't original.

Thanks in advance, guys!

Anything's possible...

VIC (not VIN) plate decoding:

1 = M45 (no OD)
2 = M46 (OD)

No sunroof typically meant M45 on pre-1981 cars. Sunroof with manual steering would be M46, as would sunroof with power steering. It wasn't until the 1981 B21F-MPG cars that M46 became standard on non-sunroof 242 and 244 cars.

Got a clue on the MPG on a B21F with M46? My 1980 flat hood had the m45 and poor mileage as well as no power. Thinking about swaping in a m46.

What is your expectation for gas mileage?
FWIW I would make sure your engine is tuned up properly before swapping in an M46.
I routinely got ~25mpg highway in a 242, B21F, M45, 3.91 diff.

Mine was around 20-21 mpg highway but not sure which rear gear is in it. 25 mpg would be nice. Oh that was on a fresh tune up. I will take your advice and check a few thing before doing the work. Got a great m46 in the Red 84 242 and going to a T5Z and some more upgrades in it. Thanks
