242GT 1979 Group C Race Car

Caught up with a friend over weekend and he gave me a few photos from earlier in the year from a few different places at Morgan Park in Warwick. Photo credit Rod Campbell

Car has been prepped including exhaust tail pipe shortening and we are off to Lakeside Raceway next Saturday for some sprints to make sure everything is ready to go for our trip to Sydney for Muscle Car Masters at end of October. At present there is over 42 cars entered in our category which should make for a good spectacle and many races within the race

Couple of sequence pics of progress through a corner

Lakeside Raceway done and dusted. Car went well and I managed to lower my PB time at this track in this car by nearly 1 second as well as peel off lap after lap in the same range so was very happy. The more seat time I get the more confidence I get that we have our suspension setup right.

Was quite a hot day (32 degrees c) with track temps probably closer to 40 plus and car did not get hot or drop any fluids at all.

In the off season we are going to change out the H cam for the KG8 now we have a baseline and see what the change reveals.

Couple of pics from the day

Quick check before we get started

We will give the car a good clean, rebalance and rotate the wheels and tyres and we are off to Sydney at the end of October for the final race meet of the year.

Well 2016 season came to a close at Muscle Car Masters in Sydney. Unfortunately we were not able to show car to its full potential on the track. We practiced ok on Friday and when it came time for qualifying on Saturday the car was running out of fuel at 5200rpms so I had to short change to suit.

We checked it over and found the distributor rotor badly scored so we put a new one of those as well as a cap. Went out for race 1 and the car was now running lean at 4000rpm. We could not diagnose it and ran 2 races out of 4 by short changing at 4000rpm just to circulate in some manner.

We suspect it is most likely WUR/CPR fuel related but we did not have a spare, gauge set nor skills to diagnose. The time has come for us to really learn Kjet. We have been avoiding it till now.

We feel we have the suspension sorted.

Now we have a baseline for the H Cam over the summer break we intend to fit the KG8 cam and we are going to go UTCIS for the WUR/CPR. We will check rest of car over.

Heaps of original photos missing - Cleaned up due to photobucket rip off attempt

Shopping done for 2016 and car booked in with a Volvo specialist in first week of 2017 to do the following

1. Compression test to make sure I did not damage anything running way to lean. Don't think I have but want to check first
2. Diagnose fuel issue before making changes. We are 90% certain it is the WUR but want to be certain. It is going anyway but don't want to be guessing.
3. If all good swap H cam for the KG8. If not good make good and swap cam
4. Fit the new UTCIS WUR and rebuilt dizzy we have
5. Tune it in shop before taking to Dyno tune
6. On Dyno we intend to run it up to check all good and if needs be tweak fuel delivery via the UTCIS. Will also get a HP and Torque number for the new setup to compare to the old H cam and standard WUR. Suspect we will have to make some changes on fuel delivery profile. The UTCIS has rpm and manifold vacuum feed and can tweak the fuel delivery at idle for the more aggressive cam. Idle will no longer be at 950rpm though but as it is track only this is a non issue.

As we do not use the fuel gauge we have bought an AFR gauge to take its place. Thanks to Dave Barton we also have a replacement face to make it blend in with the rest of our gauges.

Our R sport cluster which will see the fuel gauge on bottom right changed

and we will have one of these (left) with the Dave Barton face fitted (right) and our exhaust will have the sensor fitted

A couple of more jobs for the list. Going to fit a set of 4.11 gears in our LSD. At present we have 3.91.

Also we had moved the overdrive switch to the dash from the slide switch on top of shifter as hard with gloves to slide the switch. We only use overdrive at a couple of tracks and at the last meeting I was having to take hand off wheel and glance to find switch entering the fastest corner on the track which I found less than ideal.

At present considering using a clock spring arrangement to get a paddle shift or even 2 switches mounted on Momo steering wheel hub to select overdrive and run the later overdrive relay arrangement instead off the earlier version.

The ultimate - Works drive setup but way too pricey for this task

Or more likely this route

Or the stock later model Volvo knob with the button would also work. We already have a wiring harness and relay for it.

Bit still to ponder before we decide on solution

December 2017 update - Whilst editing for photo fix we ended up fitting switch to high beam then changed to standard relay overdrive with ability to switch in any gear and protection built in by relay link to clutch switch from cruise control as well as reverse switch light. After a year we have just gone to standard Volvo later model push button relay with standard 04th gear switch input. Just did not use the other and if was just more electrical to fail at the track. Kiss principle. keep it simple stupid

Had a thought last night as we don't use the horn (not needed and horns already removed anyway) we could possibly use the horn buttons on the wheel as the overdrive engagement. Well within reach of thumbs whilst on wheel. Will research this one a little more.

You can use the horn button to trigger the OD relay, but you'll need another relay to change polarity since the OD uses a momentary 12 volt signal to toggle.

Nice wheel BTW. It looks familiar. ;-)

Thanks for the information. Based on that for simplicity, looks and economics I think the horn button is streaking ahead in this race.

They are a great wheel.

Ours was mint when we bought it but unfortunately the leather now has a couple of scratches and a small bite mark. When we were rebuilding the car we put the wheel on the floor in the shed along with everything else. Unbeknown to us one of the dogs decided he liked our mint rare RSport momo too and dragged it down the bitumen driveway to the long grass. When we went to fit the wheel a couple of days later we could not find it. We thought someone had stolen it but thankfully it was spotted before the mower ran over it. So the Mint wheel is not so mint and to say we were not happy is an understatement. One small mercy is that all the damage is on the back of the wheel and worst at the bottom so hard to spot.

That story reminds me of the '65 Lincoln Continental (w/suicide doors) that my dad bought cheap during the gas crunch in '73. The car was beige w/beige leather interior in mint condition until one of the dogs jumped in the open window one night and chewed up the arm rest in the middle of the front bench seat.

I'm pretty sure the wheel in my pic and yours are one in the same. The dings and dents match. Didn't you buy it off my website?

Yes mans best friend can test that theory some times.

Yes it came from the USA about 4 years ago and looking at bottom dings in wheel almost no doubt. We were very happy to find one and I don't think I have seen one for sale since.

In terms of worse case thankfully there was no damage to the centre piece. That and the dog could have chewed the wheel to bits

I'd put a WheelSkin on that puppy --- provide a bit more diameter/grip, cover blemishes and protect the wheel from any more abuse while being used in a racer. Looks something like this -- Volvo/Momo dealer installed wheel.

Holiday clean up. We thought we better get our spare 1979 shell in out of the weather before it was of no use. We scored a few spare virgin blocks for free and being the hoarders we are could not say no. Also cleaned up our spares bins and labeled them all for packing away for safe keeping. As the spare shell is going to be stored in the shed with a car cover over it to hide the ugly what better place to store spares then inside and the boot (trunk).

Before we cleaned her up and towed her to new resting place. Don't let mirrors fool you its a 1979 model

Just a couple of spares packed away for safe keeping. Theres a couple of 405 heads and an M46 with bell housing tucked in there somewhere

Engines safe and sound and other spares if needed. Engine on the stand is a known compression rebuilt bottom end and the other 3 (2 plus other in boot) are rebuilders if ever needed. Way too many but better than seeing them scrapped
