Brand new '81 262C Bertone Coupe . . .

I was only at 34% capacity.....checked a few threads on a few different sites -- all pics now with the familiar "PB" piece instead of the pics. And now, no automatic login --- and the password reset function doesn't seem to work. I bet they're overwhelmed with folks trying to move their images to other sites. What a huge screw up.

Haven't been able to figure out how to use imugr....

The calipers were probably bare cast iron before they rusted. You could get cast iron gray caliper paint from Eastwood.

FeO + H3PO4 = FePO4 + 3H2O

Iron Oxide + Phosphoric Acid = Ferric Phosphate (which is black) + water

This is not paint, it is the Ferric Phosphate chemical coating. It won't rust or flake off as it is really part of the iron casting and is otherwise stable in the presence of salt etc. No idea how it will stand up to the heat of the brakes though. Easier than painting.

As you can see, the chemical reaction turned more black where I did not get all the rust off. Where I was able to buff most of the rust off with a wire brush there is some rust color showing through but overall it looks black.

I still remember the eureka moment some 55 years ago when I had a flash of adequacy and understood how to balance chemical formula.

For those following along.... http://blog.photobucket.com/status/

$39.99 a month to be able to have TB (or other forums) host pictures the way we're used to doing it. And right now, my account appears to have been suspended until I do something. I'm at .6 of 2 free megs or gigs (or whatever the measure is) - 33% of the "free" space. Can't access any of my library.

Extorsion.

OK - rant over.

I couldn't stand it. I cut-n-polished the new bronze paint above the belt trim hoping that was good enough. NOT. Finished the bottom this evening. Looks like an $8,000 paint job.

Used the 3M Perfect-It 2/3 polish after 1500 cut to flat and the 3M 3000 grit foam pad.

Originally bought a variable speed rotary polisher but all the professional paint people said to use DA with cutting foam pads. Fine, if you have all day and do not go to sleep doing the polish. The above products with a wool pad make this a couple hour job. If you can see any of the wool swirl, which I can't, only then go to the DA foam pads.

Nibble . . . Nibble . . . Nibble . . . .

Big day on Porter's Mountain . . . .

Got the door openers cleaned, polished and the rubber bumper stop repaired. The stop comes from Volvo as only a half inch piece of vacuum hose which immediately starts to fail. The more it wears the more the pull part of the opener becomes recessed. Rather than another piece of hose destined to fail I built it up with shrink wrap until the handle was flush with the surround.

And then . . . and then . . .

Got four new blinds hung, 10 gallons of week killer sprayed, and the gun cabinet parts stained . . . and still got a nap.

Converting a 45 year old high end china cabinet into a new 14 long gun cabinet.

That's all folks . . . .

That gun cabinet will be awesome. Will it be lighted? I've always wanted a glass front gun cabinet, but figured it was a liability. I always thought about only putting single shots in one to keep the cost down if they were stolen, etc. but was always too scared. I'd love to see yours finished.

Thanks for the comments on one of my other little hobbies.

Yeah, lighted with LED commercial case lighting.

Stolen . . . insurance.

I will try to focus on the Bertone finish but will try to throw in an occasional aside.

I run a pawn shop so I likely hear much more theft stories than the average person, so maybe I'm jaded. I didn't realize all that many folks insured their firearms either. One customer of mine, I know does, but he's a little off to begin with.

Are you getting those bright white led strips? They're super easy to install and work great and are very cheap. Try Amazon if you haven't gotten them yet. That's what I have in my showcases at work.

Wheel balance problem

My beautiful refurbished Corona wheels have become a problem.

They came back out of balance and rather than take them the 80 miles back to Alloy Wheel Repair Specialist (AWRS) I tried my favorite local tire store. The worst problem wheel turned out to not only be out of balance but out of round also. Then measured the others and all were out of round. The outside of all was good but the interior was 0.035" to .054" out of round as measured by a computer managed Hunter force balance system.

Discussed with AWRS and they said (on the phone) that their warranty was lifetime and that I should bring the wheels back.

I went through this on some Jaguar wheels and found a specification of 0.015" maximum run out. Web search did not produce a Volvo specific specification but several aluminum wheel posts indicate that 3mm, 0.012" is the new wheel criteria.

You would think for what they charge it would me than just a visual inspection. Looks good, next. :grrr:

Wheel saga . . . .

RWC,

You were close to right. On the second re-manufacture two of the 4 wheels could not be brought within specs. One was bent so far out laterally that there was no hope. The other was so far out of round that a second effort at straightening did not solve the issue and the balance took 8.5 oz of weights . I don't know what that means. Might be back to the tire store for that one.

The shop apparently made no attempt the first time to even look at radial or lateral run out but they sure were pretty. They use a magnetic clamp on dial gauge to measure run out. I would suggest that they invest in latest Hunter automated system if for no other reason than to cut down on labor time.

I ripped off down to visit my best buds at VoluParts and got the best of about a dozen remaining Corona's. Terry has retired and Bill is sure looking his age. I have been doing business with these guys since 1977.

Left AWRS with the wheels to see how bad they are.

Too bad your car did not come with the original wheels. I'm sure they would have spun near perfect.

My wife and I put all 180k miles on these original wheels so I can't complain much. AWRS has been very gracious ICW the situation. They are going to completely remanufacture the new junk yard wheels at no charge. Perhaps only fair since they did not check the original submitted wheels for radial and lateral run out and returned them completely unacceptable.

I hope to resolve this situation with a high recommendation for AWRS when this is all over.

One negative thing that will probably not get resolved is the radial run out. They simply do not have the equipment necessary to bring bent wheels back to 3mm OEM specifications.
