240 Does anyone recognize this

It appears to be a small spring where one side is compressed. Diameter is about 8mm. Maybe some sort of locking mechanism for a fastener?
 
Looking at this thread https://ozvolvo.org/discussion/12742/m47-transmission-what-is-this-spring it seems to be the same spring you are looking for. I believe it presses down a ball on the selector shaft.

I appreciate the help, but I don't think that's the spring. That spring has the top and bottom flattened. My spring is also bent (on purpose it seems). I think the spring I have was actually manufactured this way. I don't see any sign of damage.

I initially thought the detent spring from around the shift lever, but then you said 8mm.

Then I thought some internal part, but you didn't say "taking apart", just "removing".

Most springs are somewhat flattened on the ends, to make a "closed" coil that keeps it centered and/or won't unscrew off the part. They can also appear "bent" when they've been stretched too much or too often, and snap off a few coils.

Was your spring rolling around on the floor, perched on top of the trans, stuck in your sock?

Doesn't seem to have the profile of a pulled-out helicoil, so..... ? :e-shrug:

This spring is so perfectly formed that I really doubt it's bent. If I were to flip it upside down, it would look identical to that picture.

Ian found it rolling on the floor while we were pulling my trans. And now that I think about it, there's a chance this came from my harbor freight transmission jack

Gotta put it in the jar of extra screws that similarly appear during big jobs

From an engineering perspective, it doesn't look like a particularly useful spring (maybe for some ball detent or something), so I'd say proceed without it
