Looking for some extra hands on site with a no-start (or tow back to a shop). Any recommendations for Volvo specialists in Mass, that will travel to Orleans?

The car is a 1992 745 Turbo A/T, with 184K. I've replaced the fuel relay, and now hear the pump, however still no start. Does crank. I've ordered replacement parts: coil, distributor cap & rotor, plugs, wires, and all filters, will take a shot at installing those alone if I can't find an experienced Volvo guru. I'm a decent with a wrench but don't know my way around these cars too well. Any help is appreciated.

Chuck's Import Village in Freetown is the closest person to you that I know, he's Volvo only. I don't know if he'd come out to you, but you can ask. The phone number from Google search is (508) 763-2248

There must be someone closer to you though. I'm going to reach out to a Volvo guy I know on the Cape, I'll let you know what he says.

Good luck,
Greg

That list of parts shouldn't be too bad to install by yourself, although cap and rotor will be annoying since it's on the back of the head. People on here can give advice on actually doing it.

Thanks! I did hear of a place called Foreign Affairs, out on the Cape, but I haven't been able to get in touch with the owner. Will give Chuck's a call tomorrow.

I've poked around the forums a little, and as you say the parts shouldn't be too bad to install, but I was hoping for a fall-back if the parts listed don't do the trick.

before you go spending any more money check your fuel pump relay or your radio suppression relays if either of those are bad they'll cause a no start issue.

Yes on my 1992 940 I went bonkers trying to figure out why the car wouldn't start. Pulled the fuel rail off in the engine bay and cranked it over to check for fuel, and sure enough no fuel. I thought it must be the fuel pump so sadly I spent the day inhaling fumes and replacing the pump. Still no start, then my dad suggests checking the fuel pump relay and TADAA! Actually it's quite funny, my temporary fix until the new one came in the mail (20 bucks off ebay) was to tap on the bad relay with the butt of a screwdriver and the car would kick to life.

I've heard radio suppression relays can cause the same problem. Also very cheap off ebay.

One question- have you tested for spark yet? You know, pulled one the spark plugs out of the blocks and ground it while someone turns the engine over and check for a nice strong spark?

In case you haven't already fixed your problem, I snapped some pics of the dealer / shop directory.

I'd have no hesitation about going to my old work on Martha's Vineyard, but the ferry ride probably puts it over the top.
If you have a crank sensor, that is suspect as well.

Thank you for all the responses!

Here are all the symptoms I know of: dad was driving down the road when the car cut out. He parked it and it sat for a month. Starter would no longer engage (just whine), so I tapped that with a hammer, and it came online, cranked but still no start. Replaced the fuel pump relay, still no start. However, I do hear the fuel pump priming. Since I already have the coil, that'll be my next blind-fired bullet.

I have not checked for spark or checked the T-belt. Need to do both... but I'm also adding to the "check" list:

a) radio supression relay (what are these? injector and pump relays?)
b) fuses
c) crank sensor

I also have the following maintenance parts to install - I don't think they're the most likely suspects, but can't hurt to do anyway: (distributor cap, rotor, plugs, wires).

If you still need a shop to bring it to, I would second the recommendation for Enginuity. He is $$ though, but there's also Wentworth motorsports in Brewster, closer to you, but he's $$$ and specializes in VW but works on Volvo's too.
There's also a Volvo guy in Harwich on Queen Anne road who is more low key and reasonably priced but is not as well known. He bled my brakes once when I was having issues with that, and that was on a non-abs 240 which is a nightmare as far as brake bleeding goes. I don't know his # off hand, and he's not online but next time I drive past I'll update this. He has a sandwich board on the street that says "Volvo repair and service" with a phone number, if you google cape destinations in Harwich, it will bring you to within a quarter mile of his place.

Ask your father if it sputtered out and seemed like it was running out of gas then it's fuel pump relay or the fuse or combination of both fuse and relay.

Radio suppression relay is for the injectors without it the injectors don't do anything.

I had a 940se that had a mind of it's own when it wanted to start. It would sometimes start when cold then it wouldn't start after being warm or sometimes wouldn't start at all. I replaced the relay with the identical relay next to it. Voila it fired up and consistently started up warm or cold.

Thanks spiffy. I'll try Google street view to see if I can hunt down who you're talking about in Harwich.

okoye, he said it cut out on him, rather than sputtered out.

So I take it best guess is ignition coil or now the RSR, at this point. When I get back out there later this week, I'll check for spark, and swap relays around to hopefully diagnose. The timing belt was changed 3 years ago, so I don't think it's that... will check on it anyway. Will check fuses, too.

Thanks everybody. I haven't thrown in the towel and called a pro, just yet... I went out to the Cape today to try to diagnose a little better.

1) Spark is reaching the cylinders, confirmed

2) The camshaft is spinning when cranking

3) I can hear the fuel pump priming (I think)

Still no start.

I looked around for the radio suppression relay, which is now my prime suspect. Is there only one RSR or are there TWO of these? Found one under the wiring on the inner fender by the battery. After wrestling with it for a bit, I was able to yank it out. I jumped pins 3 to 4 with a paper clip, to see if I could get power to the injectors, but I'm not sure if I was doing this properly, or even if I was on the right part.

So this model only has one RSR, and I've ruled it out.

Coolant temp sensor? Crank sensor? Hoping that it's not something hidden in the wiring... next step is to check for fuel actually reaching the injectors, so when I'm up there again, that'll be the plan.
