S/V/C Gear Shift Lever Knob Won't Go On

I am trying to replace the gear shift lever knob on a 1997 S90. When the button was depressed on the old knob, the whole lever would "pop up" rather than shift gears. I bought the new knob as shown in the photos below. I can take the old knob off and put it back on without any issues. When I try to put on the new knob, the button doesn't come out so I am unable to change gears. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I had been pushing down with my body weight. Whacking it with my fist worked.
