Volvo 245 Turbo

After selling my restored 740 I was able to pick up this 1983 245 Turbo. At first I didnt want to buy it, but after visiting the car at 2am because of sleeping problems it caught me like a disease. The car had a original Turbo+ kit in it, which means that it has 180hp instead of 155hp because of a Intercooler. Within 1 day I had sold the 740 and bought the Turbo. Me and my dad transported it to our garage, inspected the car a little bit and then we went for a drive.

In the pictures below you can clearly see the Turbos main problem - Rust.... lots of it

All gauges work, but the speedometer wobbles when driving under 50km/h, so I will replace the drive gear later on

It is a original sunroof car, but with a electric BMW Glassroof fitted, its so nice and works like it should.

When inspecting the car we have found loads of rust. Not all was visible right away because of a patch up job with fiberglass by a previous owner. I didnt photograph all of the rust.

As a part of my apprenticeship I had to learn to weld all thickness of metal, that comes in handy now. I already repaired some rust holes on my 740, but I guess this is my biggest rust job yet. This is all for now, on Saturday we will clean up all rust spots and decide where to cut for new metal welding.


Btw on the test drive there was a tuned VW Golf GTI mk3 tailgating us and wanting a race and so he got one. Volvo:1, GTI:0
My plans for now are to make it ready for inspection, paint it and then tune it. 0.8 Bar-1 Bar, Group-A Intercooler, B23E intake, 1990+ turbo exhaust manifold and a Group-A Turbo etc.

Black wagons are so great looking. Wish you well with the car. Can you do me a favor? Pm me the bosch part number on the control pressure regulator? Just curious as to what a B21E uses. Thank you.
 
Wowzer! That's a whole heckuva lotta rust to patch! Very good practice for sure. Fabricating all those curves for a patch material should be really fun! Can't wait to see it!

It uses the 082 version instead of the 079, 123, or 128.

Thank god there are raplacement panels avaiable, otherwise it would have taken us hours hammering the panels.

Hello Vovlo0815 from Switzerland.
I thought the people in Switzerland take care more about the bodyprotection of their cars.
This is too much of rust in my opinion. it is PITA to remove all the rusty parts and weld in new metal. if it would be a P1800, even a P444 or maybe a Amazon, I would think about to start a restauration. I'm old now, and did this s h i t in the past too, now I know more.... still I'm stupid in buying cars till nowadys.
Good luck, you will need a second car to drive. You will work a long time on this car if you do it proper.
A bondojob will be fast, and won't last.

if it's really a K-Jetronic engine, you need a loooot of skill and experience to tune this safe and fast.

I know, its a lot of work, but its such a rare car, especially in black . I dont really see a problem with the rust, since there are replacement panels avaiable for almost everything and I?ll be able to work about 2-3 hours every evening on the car. This already is my second car, my summer car is a 242GT. Both the Turbo and the GT use the K-jet, but this isnt a problem since I have informed myself a lot about the K-Jet and had the possibility to inspect a few proper K-Jet Racecars.

This update comes a bit late, I know

Me and my dad inspected the 245 very thoroughly, then decided what parts we need to order and where we need to cut for replacement panels. I replaced the 12 year old tires with some newer ones that were from my GT.
The spare wheel well on the driverside is already out (photographed the whole process but didnt notice that there was no SD-Card in the Camera) and we repaired the rust on the rear left. About 3 weeks ago we took a 500km trip and bought 4 rustfree doors from a 1992 240 Classic. We noticed, that the trunk hinges are bad, which is why the trunkdoor is hanging and rubbed against the metal, causing the rust holes.

Next weekend I?ll be visiting the Retro Classic in Stuttgart, soI wont work on the car for 2 weeks. But after that the wheelarches are next to be repaired.

If I had my own shop with enough space, I would do rust repair. I believe you are doing right by your car. Looks like you are off to a good start. Good luck!

Thank you, me and my dad are fotunate enough to be able to work on the car at my workplace. If we would have our own garage, then the car would be done faster.

We used 3 of the 4 free days during easter to repair alot of rust. It doesnt look like much from the outside, because we repaired many reinforcement that cant be seen on the picutres. We did some external repairs aswell, have a look for youself

We ran into some problems with the rear right wheel arch, as you can see both replacement panels arent the same as the original on the car

This almost would have been perfect, but the arch is too round and it dosnt fit well on the rear section where it meets with the wheel well

The arch should smooth out at the bottom, but on this panel it is still clearly visible at the bottom

The problem with the rear arch held us up for some time, but we made a decision and hopefully will be able to turn it into reality tomorrow.

Keep in mind, that this is a restoration, modification and improvement. We will try to improve the car as much as possible. I will explain this more tomorrow and show pictures of our ideas.

Even the inner Wheel arch was very rusted, so we decided to cut it away completely and welded in the outer arch

Our plan is to roll the edge completely, that way we will be able to run wider wheels without scraping with the coilovers

This is below the trunk lid, where the trim goes. We cut away the lip and decided to leave it away, because it only collects dirt and will eventually start rust

We made a little mistake... we sprayed zinc spray to prevent rust and didnt realise, that the fumes will stay so long in the car. After some welding we noticed a small fire, that burned the cables a little. Not that big of a deal, since the cables were rotten anyways.
