No real reason if you got the time, got the dime and want to do the work.

A B21FT is a better engine anyway I have 258K on mine and the hatching is still fully around in the bores and there's no ridge at all at the top of the cylinder walls.

Lets say down in Chula Vista there are couple guys that can resolve every smog check problem for $200. Heard from friend of a friend.

More than I usually pay for a parts car but I had a Cl alert up for 10 months and this is the only one that came up with under 200k on it. 115k second owner. Got the locker too.

I've parted and flipped enough cars that I was able to come up with a pretty good chunk of the down payment to buy my first home. I generally know how to find a good deal.

Guys like that disappear pretty quickly and then you're stuck holding your flaccid penis

The smog fines the technician and the shop of any faul play.. ca makes it stupid difficult to get and maintain a smog cert...

Iirc it's something like 5-10k per violation

Bought plenty of illegal +t 240s... they all knew a guy

Yet all my cars are smog exempt ... hmmm

Op why not buy a smog legal +t car? There's a few around ... I know a guy in this thread that will sell you his

I guess I'm kind of attached to our 90. The only thing I don't like is the color... And of course the -t. If i found a straight 90+ in red or blue for cheap i'd go for it but otherwise I've sorted my white one out decently over the last for 3 or 4 years.

Besides isn't the theme of this forum to turbo all the bricks?!

Sentimental value can be a bitch ... I got a few of those.

Nothing left but to do the swap then go to ref but make sure you cut sprangz and crush it after.

Yeah if you do the swap just have to have all the emissions stuff that came on your donor car. Egr, cat, heat riser etc. not all bricks are +t. I stay na, less work and its less to go wrong or repair. To each their own tho.

Even after +T, you will not be going 80mph climbing the mountain with your car is fully loaded. Loaded down and long mountain climb really stress the cooling system especially if you have a/c running as well.

Stock turbo doesn't really make that much torque.

Because referee can potentially say no, and you'll be wasting your money and time.

Can anyone confirm that the ref can or cannot identify if a b230ft and out of a 92 vs 95 940?

Yes it's marked on the driver's side of the block at the front below the head. They do check that

I recently went through a full 940 (motor, when, vacuum stuff, computers, matching cat) swap into my 1980 242. It didn't go so well, the car also has a T5, and the BAR ref wouldn't pass it because it didn't have the auto trans that the 1990 940 originally came with.

I've been told not all refs would check that, but it was my experience. Car is registered out of state now and I'll deal with the consequences should that day arise. It's a shame really, I spent a ton of time and effort making sure all the emissions stuff was up to snuff (passed the sniff test by 50% across the board) and now I'm going to rip it all out.

Interesting. Were there any issues aside from the gearbox?

My swap plans are on temporary hold, my DD got stolen last week, not sure if I'll get a something that needs work but I gotta reserve time to sort that all out.

CA bull****.

My car pass AZ emission fine, on mircosquirt. AZ checks tailpipe emission, hoses to the canisters, and make sure the gas tank doens't leak.

If you call it a 1991 740 swap, then you could get away with a manual. I looked into this heavily. 1991 was the last year that Volvo offered a B230FT with a manual trans behind it in the US. You would probably need to find a VIN from a 1991 740 Turbo /manual and tell them that was the donor car. ECUs are interchangeable (or maybe the same exact part) as a 940T. Also if your 240 was originally CA emissions (look on the stickers) then your 940 or "740" also needs to be a CA emissions version. If your 240 was 49-state, then you can use either a CA or 49-state donor car for the drivetrain.

Also - save yourself some major headaches and re-use your original 240 engine wiring harness. The 740/940 harness needs lots of modification to work, but the 240 harness will plug into everything on the B230FT engine including ECU & EZK. No need to change that.

Thanks for the tip. The sticker on the strut tower for the donor car says "This vehicle conforms to US EPA regulations applicable to 1991 model year vehicles." It doesn't say CA or 49-state anywhere on there. Any idea if that's a problem? The PO said the original owner was from the east coast so this has me concerned. I'll check the recipient car when my wife gets home from work but I'm pretty sure its a CA car, bought it from the original owner family out here.

Do they need to see the VIN from the donor car, or if I present it as a 91 CA car and make sure all the appropriate CA smog gear is there (if different), will that be OK?

Answer to my own question based on google image searching: A CA car will say "...US EPA and CA..."
