Default Your Favorite Sounding B230 Turbo 3 Inch Exhaust Setup

Your Favorite Sounding B230'ish (meaning b230ft, b230f+t, B23e..etc) TURBO 3 Inch Exhaust Setup

Criteria: Not straight pipe, b230'ish, turbo, 3" all the way.

Currently the below wagon is 3" turbo back straight through shooting out behind passenger rear mudflap, and I am looking for experienced high power muffler/ exhaust recommendations that sound great/can keep the flow. Car is around ~400whp and will be daily driver. Cheers!

Ben

I like the stealth aspects of my 2 muffler SAM Automotive exhaust. 2 large mufflers with 3" piping that you can see straight through. I don't think they hamper flow much. And it keeps the car sounding nice and mild. Nobody ever suspects anything.

I almost think it's a little louder at idle?

PS: Bonus fun fact: When I had a cracked block and it was blowing copious amounts of steam out the tailpipe, it was sending smoke rings about 30 - 40 feet out. It was absurdly awesome. Didn't really make up for the hassle of pulling the motor out and building it up again from another bare block, but it was amusing.

I have two 3" Magnaflows on mine and it's very civilized. They're straight through, perforated tube with packing, so they should flow well. I have a video clip on my project thread, but it's not very good.

This. My similar exhaust is louder at idle than anything else.

I had a single 3" Magnaflow on my 16VT - good deep sound, not too loud around town. A bit loud on road trips, but not ear-bleedingly so, and might also have been a function of an early low-ratio axle. Also "louder at idle than at load."

I reused the cat and cat-back for my 5.3 swap, and interestingly, it's almost completely inaudible at idle, but a similar volume on the highway at similar revs (but with twice the firing events).

I heart my 3" side exit with single Amazon 11" glass pack. It does seem louder at idle than cruise but it makes some serious noise at wot

i have a magnaflow straight through 6x6x18 muffler in the rear with 2.5" pipe and it's a bit louder than stock but not too loud. No cat or resonator either. Its very quiet actually at idle and low throttle.

Why don't you recreate the MVP 3" exhaust? 3" Dynomax Ultraflow muffler in the stock location, stainless steel pipe from the turbo back to the tailpipe. Cat is mounted in the stock non-turbo spot, under the car. Sounds deep at idle, and is audible while driving, but not obnoxious like your side exit.

I think that's similar to what Jonathan had on the car when it belonged to him. You could always PM him at stereophile33 to find out for sure. I currently have the 2.5" cat-back setup on my 242, and it's quieter than the old Magnaflow setup that I had on my 245. Just a little louder than stock, but not enough to really notice it.

Love the input dudes! I'm really trying to find a mean sounding setup that has a nice burble, and a great WOT...like freaking aggressive sounding...But that's just me.
I'm going to install an electric actuator as well so I can have tame for highway/long drives/music. Wouldn't be surprised if I go magnaflow after the actuator but I will probably put a glass pack or single small muffler based off this thread before the Y pipe/actuator, just not a straight pipe guy.

Let's keep this thread open to taste and still in the criteria, not just my wants!

what i learned is, that openpipe from turbo to tip in 3" does not always sound best ;)

My fav sound is that very dirty aggressive brapbrapBRAP through a short 3" hoodvented or sidepipe pipewith a pounding screamerpipe like Bamse had in his old shat underpants.

3" turbo back with a single small (I think it's like 12"x6"x3") magnaflow.

I have the same exhaust. Love it! Been running it since 2006. I’m running the atp 3” wastegate so it’s 3” all the way back.

I have a 3" MVP single muffler with cat system on my 82 turbo. Not quiet at all with only one muffler. It's in mild steel and was powder coated black long ago. The muffler is a round stainless magnaflow in the rear location. I like it but it is loud. If I duplicate it I would add another muffler in the front muffler spot. Or a resonator tip would also work. Just to take a bit more of the edge off while keeping a powerful sound.

Can you describe the sound of it's idle, power on, and over-run?

Thanks guys. It sounds like that normally but the tunnel doesn't hurt it. It's a B230F, homebrew header, HY35, 3" all the way back with like a 21" Dynomax glass pack. There are very few bends in the exhaust, I think just the 2 90 degree bends at the front. The glass pack is just enough to clean the sound up but it still has that raspy red block sound.
