Has anyone seen a case of strut tower mushrooming on their 240? I just installed a pair of GT Plates as well as Ben Kaplan's strut mounts and encountered a weird issue on the passenger's side.
Driver's side went in fine, with the strut in I can adjust camber back and forth no problem.
Passenger's side took more finessing to get in, and once in, I have no adjustment, it simply will not slide. Thinking it might've been the GT plate, I tried without it, no difference. It's as if the new mount's bolts aren't quite matching up with the holes on the strut tower. Placing the GT plate up against the bottom of the tower confirms this as well, it looks as if the slots in the strut tower are too far to the front of the car compared to the plate.
The old mounts had 306,000 miles on them and we're pretty sad. Looking at them it does seem like the studs are bowed slightly outward, indicating that something had moved. Although it's weird they look bent out seeing as the holes seem like they're not far out enough, out being away from the center of the strut.
So maybe the top of my strut tower has bowed some and is causing a problem? I'm aware this is a problem with some BMWs and those guys fix it with a block of wood and a hammer.
Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced something similar on these cars? (240s)
